Brand New Service Survey - Guess Who Won Hands Down

Nov 29, 2007, 5:33 PM
The January 2008 Consumer Reports arrived at my home today. They have a special cell phone section on pages 30 through 44.

There is a multi-page report on cell phone service covering 47,629 responses to their most recent survey in September 2007. The ratings again cover twenty major metropolitan area across the US. There are numerical Reader scores and graphic survey results for the following four criteria: No service, Circuits full, Dropped calls and Static.

The latest issue of Consumer Reports is now on the news stands. There's lots of good reading. Buy it or read it in the library for free.

Clearly, the blue striped globe didn't look very good.

I checked the survey online and determined from the Dallas ratings that the survey is a piece of crap. I have had phones on Verizon, T-mo and AT&T. Rating T-mo and AT&T equally (66) is a joke. Rating Verizon (70) ahead of AT&T is a bigger joke. They also rate Verizon as having a much better than average "no service" rating, but I get a signal many more places with AT&T than I ever did with Verizon.

Dear AT&T execs: do yourself a favor and fire your ad agency.

WonkotheSane,

Actually, when you checked the survey online you saw the September 2006 results. The September 2007 report is not online yet. However, the Dallas-Fort Worth figures in the January 2008 print issue are as follows:

Verizon 70
AT&T 68
T-Mobile 67
Sprint 58

crackberry,

You wrote "i like the disclaimer that margins of less than 5 points are meaningless..." You are almost correct.

Actually, the brand new survey published in the January 2008 issue of CR states "Differences in reader scores of fewer than six points are not meaningful." That's the same basic wording as last year's survey. However, that clearly means that six point differences are meaningful.

That makes the 47,629 responses to the most recent survey in September 2007, covering twenty major metropolitan areas, even more significant. There were six point or greater differences between AT&T and the highest score in sixteen out of twenty major metropolitan areas.

The only thing significant about the survey at all is as a measure of advertising campaigns.

Advertising campaigns?

How is advertising relevant to the responses of 47,629 people when asked about their own service experiences in the past year?
...
WonkotheSane

Dec 4, 2007, 5:51 PM
Because their responses are based on perception, and perception is modified by advertising. There isn't any objective evidence that Verizon is "the most reliable network," but many people think that because of effective "hear me now" advertising. They still ask about static and get answers, even though static is impossible with digital phones. As to the actual quality of any of the surveyed networks, surveys tell us nothing.

Shall I presume that your perception of the phoney "fewest dropped calls" advertising is more accurate than the actual EXPERIENCES of many thousands of users surveyed each year? Clearly, I must bow to one whose superior knowledge of statistical survey technology can make a statement such as "surveys tell us nothing.

The "fewest dropped calls" claim was at least supported by a technical study, though probably suspect. IMHO, the only way to evaluate cellular service is to try it out. Both companies have 30 day trial policies.

when are you guys going to realize that verizon wireless has the best national network. Not everywhere and possibly not on the phones you had in your limited travel area but on a national level VZW has the best network hands down, and most people know this.

Who is crying? Also, every single customer could care less who is better on a national level unless they travel nationally. Mostly what the customer cares about is who gets the best service where they live. Any other argument is just moot, who cares if you think whoever is the best because obviously it is your opionion and most people, especially anyone in the at&t forum could care less of your view.

thats true that local coverage is most important. having the best national network means that you have the best local coverage in more areas then the other guys.

this is just another survey that shows VZW has a better network then at&t. but hey, you guys have the iphone!

you have less real customer then vzw. tracfone blows up your numbers.

VZW has the most direct retail customers of any carrier. you dont get free m2m to tracfones.

RUFF1415

Dec 4, 2007, 3:47 AM
I don't have any customers. I am not AT&T. Nevertheless, a chunk of Verizon's total customers comes from Tracfone subscribers as well. So don't rest on those laurels.

And to think of it logically, despite what means the customer gets the service (be it retail, resellers or wholesale) those customers are using AT&T's network...and sticking with it.

Question for you: do you know 67 million people personally?

A better question is, what difference does it make whose wireless network is best if they don't provide adequate coverage where you live or use it most?

I've seen better service in all my travels throughout the state of New Jersey, through the length of the Pennsylvania turnpike and thoughout Ohio, in NYC, and in Delaware that AT&T has been the best for me compared to Verizon from my own personal experience. I have an AT&T employee line and I'm still in contract with Verizon. The VZW phone I have was suppossed to be an mp3 player but its crippled to all hell. It is rated to have fantastic service but I get much better reception with my AT&T phone and BOTH of them are LGs. Once my contract expires with VZW that number WILL be ported over.

Verizon cripples most of the features on their phones, especially with Bluetooth OBEX (Object Exchange); meaning that Verizon users can't send or receive any pictures, videos, songs, or ringtones, via bluetooth. It's a money thing.

I mean that the phone was an mp3 player UNTIL Verizon updated their firmware so that the functionality of the phone is a lot less then it was before. It can no longer play music, but I was able to go into the maitenence mode of the phone so that it can play it ONLY if it's on the miniSD card not on the phone memory and I can only use ringtones that I BUY from Vcast.

My AT&T phone allows me to fully customize the songs as ringtones, and allows me to share music and pictures using Bluetooth.

Right--The if I don't make some stuff up I might lose some sales in the NJ area kinda survey. Similar to the bogus use of Telephia reports to tout the fewest dropped calls only to be legally challenged and lose your arse and have to change your entire advertising slogan kinda thing.

I even heard that the state of Wisconsin is suing over the "More bars in more places" slogan-- 🤣

Not sure how using Telephia's research to advertise fewest dropped calls as being bogus, because honestly it was a smart business decision that drove customers into the stores. They dropped the campaign because another survey came out from Telephia that stated that the other carriers had brought their network up to par with at&t's, it wasnt because of those so called legal actions.

And the reference to More Bars in More Places is in reference to the coverage area before and after the merger with the old defunct AT&T Wireless, which also drives customers into the stores.

AT&T isnt perfect for anyone, but in alot of areas, there really is more bars in more places than what the other carriers have to offer, such as Kentucky for examp...

Did you read the Telephia report? There were a select group of areas that they rated highest, not nationwide. The data was sketchy to advertise on to say the least. Funny thing is how many people complained about fewest dropped calls when in reality the network in areas was not what was being advertised. I know a Director for

Ya know, my post had nothing to do with the fact that I sell at&t. It has to do with personal experience with both providers. Both have their ups and downs and so far everything I've seen personally has me convinced that at&t is a better service provider. I don't doubt that there are lots of places that Verizon has a lot of coverage in but so far I've personally seen better from at&t in terms of call quality, selection of phones, freedom to customize my phones, and better reception.
