Brand New Service Survey - Guess Who Won Hands Down
There is a multi-page report on cell phone service covering 47,629 responses to their most recent survey in September 2007. The ratings again cover twenty major metropolitan area across the US. There are numerical Reader scores and graphic survey results for the following four criteria: No service, Circuits full, Dropped calls and Static.
Clearly, the blue striped globe didn't look very good.
Dear AT&T execs: do yourself a favor and fire your ad agency.
Actually, when you checked the survey online you saw the September 2006 results. The September 2007 report is not online yet. However, the Dallas-Fort Worth figures in the January 2008 print issue are as follows:
Verizon 70
AT&T 68
T-Mobile 67
Sprint 58

i like the disclaimer that margins of less than 5 points are meaningless...
You wrote "i like the disclaimer that margins of less than 5 points are meaningless..." You are almost correct.
Actually, the brand new survey published in the January 2008 issue of CR states "Differences in reader scores of fewer than six points are not meaningful." That's the same basic wording as last year's survey. However, that clearly means that six point differences are meaningful.
That makes the 47,629 responses to the most recent survey in September 2007, covering twenty major metropolitan areas, even more significant. There were six point or greater differences between AT&T and the highest score in sixteen out of twenty major metropolitan areas.

The only thing significant about the survey at all is as a measure of advertising campaigns.
How is advertising relevant to the responses of 47,629 people when asked about their own service experiences in the past year?

Shall I presume that your perception of the phoney "fewest dropped calls" advertising is more accurate than the actual EXPERIENCES of many thousands of users surveyed each year? Clearly, I must bow to one whose superior knowledge of statistical survey technology can make a statement such as "surveys tell us nothing.
The "fewest dropped calls" claim was at least supported by a technical study, though probably suspect. IMHO, the only way to evaluate cellular service is to try it out. Both companies have 30 day trial policies.
you guys cry and argue anytime someone states differently its very funny.
this is just another survey that shows VZW has a better network then at&t. but hey, you guys have the iphone!
VZW has the most direct retail customers of any carrier. you dont get free m2m to tracfones.
And to think of it logically, despite what means the customer gets the service (be it retail, resellers or wholesale) those customers are using AT&T's network...and sticking with it.
Question for you: do you know 67 million people personally?

ahem, I think you should make that 70 million by now... 😉

When are you guys going to realize that Verizon Wireless has the best national network? Not everywhere, and possibly not on the phones you had in your limited travel area; but on a national level, VZW has the best network hands down, and most people know this.

A better question is, what difference does it make whose wireless network is best if they don't provide adequate coverage where you live or use it most?
/end sarcasm
My AT&T phone allows me to fully customize the songs as ringtones, and allows me to share music and pictures using Bluetooth.

Right--The if I don't make some stuff up I might lose some sales in the NJ area kinda survey. Similar to the bogus use of Telephia reports to tout the fewest dropped calls only to be legally challenged and lose your arse and have to change your entire advertising slogan kinda thing.
I even heard that the state of Wisconsin is suing over the "More bars in more places" slogan-- 🤣
🤣 🤣
And the reference to More Bars in More Places is in reference to the coverage area before and after the merger with the old defunct AT&T Wireless, which also drives customers into the stores.
AT&T isnt perfect for anyone, but in alot of areas, there really is more bars in more places than what the other carriers have to offer, such as Kentucky for examp...

Not sure how using Telephia's research to advertise fewest dropped calls as being bogus, because honestly it was a smart business decision that drove customers into the stores. They dropped the campaign because another survey came out from Telephia that stated that the other carriers had brought their network up to par with at&t's, it wasnt because of those so called legal actions.
Did you read the Telephia report? There were a select group of areas that they rated highest, not nationwide. The data was sketchy to advertise on to say the least. Funny thing is how many people complained about fewest dropped calls when in reality the network in areas was not what was being advertised. I know a Director for

I agree, there are areas like Kentucky (More inbreeding in more places)
Mad props to bigdaddyjay.
I nearly spewed half a cup of coffee out my nose upon reading that line. 😳 😁 😳
the respected nonprofit publication says that cell service is "among the lower rated services we survey."
🤣
Even the winning carrier is a loser in the grand scheme of things when you think about it.
AT&T fell behind, called "Home of iPhone, but trails the better carriers in almost all respects."
