Currently I have a MediaNet plan with my 3125. I'm looking at buying a 3G phone. If I buy an unlocked phone and just plug in my SIM, will I have 3G?

I know that officially a full data plan is the "correct" plan, but i was wondering ...

They can't stop you from having 3G, it's a signal you receive. A full data plan is not the correct plan actually. Your 3125 should have a $29.99 smart phone connect but just because it's 3G doesn't mean it's a smart phone. Which phone are you getting and what are you doing with it?

What does one gain with the $40 ($50?) data plan?

Same unlimited data, technically. A PDA will transfer more data than a smart phone which will transfer more than a regular phone. AT&T wants you to pay more. You should be okay since your unlocked. When buying a phone on contract they want you on the right plan, if not they flag your account for audit. Eventually they force you on the proper one. At some point they will make our system so that the device can't be activated without the right plan.
