Apparently I'm a "Dumb Customer"

So, my friend and I went into an AT&T store yesterday to see if they could fix her phone (even though she's with CellularOne/Dobson) because her phone wasn't properly picking up a signal. I consider myself pretty educated in the cell phone world so I tried to do what I could to her phone to try to get it to work, but to no avail, so I decided to take her to AT&T (being a GSM carrier). When I went in, the guy told me that I shouldn't have had the phone set on the 850/1900 setting because their towers were 900/1800! I just looked at him with astonishment and said "Umm, isn't that the frequency they use in Europe?" He's like "No, our towers around here are 900 so her phone needs to be set to Automatic so it can pick up all those towers." I was ...

Maybe he told you that on purpose because you were trying to have a phone from another network fixed there. Just a hunch.

i think that should be a moot point. i don't care who comes in my store, if i can help them i would, regardless of of which carrier they are with... i can't tell you how many times i've helped old ladies add minutes with those dumb cards from tracfone.

i'm very centralized on customer service, be it my customer or someone else's. and if someone else's customer remembers me and can bring me business i'm all the happier for it.

And that is exactly the way it SHOULD be. I applaud you for that level of service. Unfortunately, that is not the norm anymore. Many (not all) stores are staffed with people who: #1 - Hate their job. and #2 - Hate customers.

I am assuming that is who he ran into. Either that, or the guy really was stupid.

No you are not a "Dumb Customer" You met up with the worst that our industry has to offer: a Stupid Salesperson. I apologize to you for all of ATT adn that if you and your friend ever go into one of our stores again that you will not run into this creature again.
