Lock and Unlocked - What's the difference?

Been reading and searching through these forums for awhile.

Have noticed some talk alot about phones being sold locked or sold unlocked. Can anyone sorta sum it up all in a nutshell as to what locked or unlocked means?

I'm clueless.... 😕

Locked means the GSM phone is locked to one certain carrier (ie. ATTWS, Cingular). You can enter code, of sorts, that will disable this "subsidy lock code". Cingular will provide it's customers with the code, ATTWS will not.

As for CDMA phones (ie. Verizon, Sprint) they don't have a direct subsidy lock like a GSM phone they have what is called a MSL, which stands for "master subsidy lock" but doesn't permanently unlock a phone like it does with GSM. You have to enter the MSL every time you need to change the configuration settings. Verizon uses 000000 on it's phones, which you enter after entering a key sequence, Sprint does the same but they actually lock the phone to a different code for each phone.
