Curve & iPhone on EDGE ?????

Just wondering if anyone has a reason as to why AT&T continues to release it's "best" high-end phones (Curve & iPhone) on the EDGE network instead of 3G. I'm with another carrier and have considered switching to AT&T to get the Curve but it would def. be significant step backwards in terms of network data speed. Currently have EVDO smart phone and am a pretty heavy data user. Just curious as to why phones as advanced as the Curve & iPhone would use EDGE technology. Thanks for any replies.

Good question. 3G is to Edge what Bluetooth is to infrared.

to make the phones so slim...and keep batt life for the curv..or touchscreen for the iphone..some things have to be ommited like 3g speeds..if they were 3g..they would be the size of the treo.

Uh its not actually at&t making the decision when it comes to what device gets 3g and what doesn't. Apple chose to make the iphone edge so it could be sold world wide with out to much hassle. As for rim, they just recently decided to get of their dead @sses and put forth an effort to make a wifi 3g blackberry and it is about dam time.

You may have a point with battery life but I'm not so sure I agree with one of the reasons being to keep the phones slim. Both the Razrv3xx & Blackjack use HSDPA (3G) and both are slimmer than the Curve. Blackjack is same width as iPhone.

And the BJ's battery life sucks. I don't think it's to keep it slim, but 3G does suck up more battery so it would need a larger battery.

It's the phone manufacturer's decision whether to make the phone 3G or EDGE, not AT&T.

As for AT&T high end data phones with 3G, I would suggest the Blackjack, 8525, Treo 750, or the Nokia N75.

really i don't notice any difference in edge or 3g. I currently have the blackjack and while on vacation I was in some 3g areas, and i didn't notice any difference in internet speeds or streaming video, if there was any difference it was barely noticeable. right now 3g isn't available in enough areas for me to be worried about weather or not my phone has it. btw: im returning my blackjack for the curve. even with lack of 3g it looks like a much better phone.

I actually just came off a trip across the country, and my experience was much different. I also have the Blackjack. In 3G areas my pages loaded much much quicker. This was mostly maps and weather pages. I did some Cingular Video, but not much.

I will agree the Curve is a good phone. My boss has one, and he loves it. My other two bosses have Blackjacks, and they love theirs, as do I. But I dont think you can go wrong with the Curve if you like it better. Good luck!

thanks. i just haven't had any luck with the blackjack, battery being one of the biggest flaws. I dont know how many times I didn't have enough battery left to make a call. and the weird thing with my blackjack is even when it has some battery left, certainly enough to make a call. the phone features shut off but the phone stays on so that you cant make any calls. Other than that, I'm not really impressed with windows mobile, and the query is just too small for me.
