iPhone Dealbreaker

The rumor I have heard is that the basic rate plan available with this phone (before tax) is going to be $160 a month.

I'm not sure of the details and what would be included, or even how much truth there is to that price point, but I can't imagine people paying that much a month especially if that only includes about 450 anytime mins.

It did come from a reputable source though and if it is anything like Blackberry's internet service, would be very much enforceable.

When the most expensive data plan available is $69.99 (and that'sfor a Blackberry), why would a non-enterprise device have a plan that's more than double that?

The iPhone will be a Medianet device. There may be a new plan scheme that's created just to wedge in a 29.99 medianet pricepoint (to maximize revenue), but the iPhone can only be so special when it comes to the billing systems.

And what Blackberry service is 69.99? Are you referring to the Blackberry tethered plan that would be 74.99 with a $5 voice discount?

And I did say with the voice plan included correct?

Please don't patronize me when you have as much info, or possibly less, about the rate plans. I'm sure regardless of whatever the accompanying package will be, it won't be anything worth advertising.

I can't see them bundling voice and data together in one plan.

1. It would screw up arpu reporting.
2. Wouldn't work on family plans.
3. It would eliminate the feature attach rate AT&T reports to shareholders.

I think the data rate will be about 50 or 60 a month, and sure they'll advertise it because it'll include unlimited data, text and email for one price. Hell, they'll probably throw in some credits for iTunes purchases every month too...

But merely your source of information. Why would there be a ridiculously overpriced plan for a non enterprise device? It makes no sense given the current pricing plan structure.

The Blackberry plan I was referring to was Blackberry International, though Blackberry tethering is also 69.99.

For the iPhone, it will be a MediaNet plan (since all non Enterprise phones use MediaNet plans), though I would bet money on a new higher price point (29.99 seems about right) because AT&T is greedy. 🙄

Well ... there are a few thing the iPhone won't have. One is 3G. Another is multi-media messsaging. It won't do instant messaging. Oh yeah, no WAP browser, so no MediaNet. Remember the target audience has to be able to afford the damm thing, so don't expect many pre-teens to be carting these around. One of the demos showed you looking at the Wall Street Journal. You can't tell me the iPhone isn't going to be the new "thropy-phone". And wasn't the original RAZR around $500 after discounts and a two-year contract? And didn't Motorola sell about of million of these before they price came down?

where are you hearing that it won't have multimedia? it will. and it will have media net, it will be a link like it is on the 8525 and blackjack. and as far as 3G, i'm not sure why everyone is making a big fuss about it. it will do just fine on edge.

It wont have MMS (picture messaging, video messaging). To share pics, or vids, you have to send them through email... engadgetmobile.com

It does not message to IM users... so no AOL or MSN... although, Apple just announced it will allow 3rd party apps to be added... check apple.com

I just said medianet because it's a non enterprise device. Just because it's not using WAP doesn't mean it won't still have a MediaNet data plan. My N75's built in Nokia browser uses HTML, not WAP, even though the access point is still on WAP. I suspect that the iPhone will still use WAP for an access point, but the internet capabilities will be. . .

Who knows?

It's hard to tell from the commercials if they're using just a demo screen mode on the device, or if they're using an actual iPhone.

But if it's not an existing enterprise data plan (it won't be), and it's not a MediaNet plan, than it may be a new class of plan all together.

Etymology: Latin refutare to check, suppress, refute
1 : to prove wrong by argument or evidence : show to be false or erroneous
2 : to deny the truth or accuracy of
- re·fut·able /-'fyü-t&-b&l/ adjective

Sorry I had to do it..

Refutable = a person trying to type on his/her laptop while his/her friend is driving down quite possible the worst highway ever created. Refutable, Reputable, looks the same when your laptop is bumping up and down like a 3 year old after a mountain dew!

My best friend's ,cousin's, mail man's, wife's friend of a friend, that knows a person that heard the same rumor at school, from a student, that heard the same rumor from her baby's daddy's best friend, that works at Radio Shack (part time), from another employee. That Radio Shack rep heard it from a direct at&t rep, that heard it from another direct at&t rep, that knows someone in the corp side of at&t, and that corp rep heard the rumor from an Apple security guard, who happened to have lunch with a Apple engineer that works side by side with Steve Jobs.

There is no such thing as 'a little while' in cellphone land. It could be 6 mths - a year before a 3g version is released. Also, who really cares about 3g other than aircard users?? Edge speeds are plenty fast for the average person. Personally, I won't be getting the iphone since it doesn't have a removable battery.
