Cingular divesting itself of certain markets...

The following quote came from the Washington Post story about the merger with ATTWS:

"To satisfy the antitrust concerns of regulators, Cingular will have to sell AT&T Wireless's business, including stores and customers, in 16 mostly rural and suburban markets, according to the sources."

Different stories have mentioned Kentucky and Missouri among the areas that will be affected. Does anyone have precise information on what areas of those two states will be affected?

I live in SE Missouri and work in both W Kentucky and SE Missouri and just wonder if my roaming ability might be severely downgraded once this takes effect in the next few months. If anyone knows more than I do, please feel free to educate me on the subject 🙂

What exactly does this mean for Litchfield County, CT?? Service here is terrible with any carrier - but of the mix, I would say Cingular is probably the best. I've been told for months by Cingular that once the buy out of ATTWS is complete service will be much better. But now I'm getting the impression that it isn't going to change at all. Why was Litchfield County singled out??

I don't think roaming will suffer if you have a national plan. The divests are just in places where the combined company would have owned more than 80Mhz of bandwidth.

It's not that the combined company isn't going to do business in those areas, it's just that the combined company has to sell the ATTWS portion in those markets.

I thought it was just a matter of divesting ATTWS assets in certain markets, not pulling the combined company out altogether, but this link seems to suggest otherwise...I'm confused..

QUOTE: "Cingular did not get AT&T without having to divest some of its assets. Settlements with the FCC (news - web sites) and the DOJ require the merged company to pull out of markets in parts of Connecticut, Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, Tennessee, Kentucky, Arkansas, Georgia and Louisiana."
