Specifically, what can one do on the internet that the other can't? I will be getting a Black jack and I at least want to be able to use google maps and surf to ebay. Thanks

well media net is cingulars "home page" that they offer. It is fairly simple and gives you access to things such as news, weather, finance, movietimes, traffic, downloads, popular email such as hotmail, yahoo, aol, and others. It satisfies the needs for most users. If you have unlimited media net you can also use whatever web capable features your phone has. Speeds can vary depending on the device you carry. PDA connect is for PDA's it gives you unlimited xpress email and media net. Typically for a 3g phone your internet speeds will be faster with PDA connect compared to just a media max subscription.

With the blackjack, you cannot use a media net plan. If you want internet on it at all, you'll have to get the PDA connect or a pay per use feature.

You are mistaken sir, you can ABSOLUTELY use the media net on any phone. You will either need to grandfather it in from your previous phone or get a rep who doesn't mind giving it to you. The notion that it can't be used is a fallacy of the highest order.

Oh, you can USE it, but when they catch you using it it'll be taken off and you'll be on pay per use.

Don't contradict me.

I'll contradict whomever, wherever mom.

The frequency with which the system is swept to remove these customers is a rarity. Either a sweep in care or telegence will often overlook these minor inconsisties unless the data usage is high into the gig's.

The sweeps are indeed rare, but what is more rare is being able to set up the Blackjack with Medianet without hassle.

Yes, everyone & their dog knows that it's possible to get a phone data using MediaNet when it should be on PDA connect. However, policy states that is must be used with PDA Connect because of the enterprise capabilities.

DON'T go around telling people that they should be able to do something that's against Cingular policy - more often than not, they won't be able to get that set up.

It is quite a PITA that Cingular charges so much for the data plan on the Blackjack, but promising people a loophole that may not be there for them is a sure way to piss off more customers.

If you know so much then go ahead and put Medianet on your blackjack but when Cingular finds out and they will find out eventually (they have a whole department dedicated to doing account sweeps to find things like this) dont come complaining here on this message board and ask us for advice on how to get rid of the ensueing $2000 phone bill you received because they took the medianet off of your phone and put you on pay per use.

While I don't dispute that a department that performs account sweeps exists, the number of people who have been affected by the removal of media net is likely in the hundreds. That number is compared to those who are using media net and that is likely in the hundreds of thousands.

Actually I rarely see a customer with the wrong internet plan on their account. Of the people I've seen on a wrong account and those who have been billed, I'd say the odds are about 1 out of 3 that get caught. I wouldn't call those good odds.

I wouldn't call those accurate odds at all. You base this on what? The traffic that comes into your store isn't a fair assessment.

MediaNet = for WAP browser phones (non smart phones and PDAs). They access a web portal designed specifically for mobile phones - a limited internet as it were with content and features designed for cell phones.

PDA connect = for phones with HTML capable browsers such as internet explorer. these types of devices use more data because they have more capable browsers than a typical voice centric cell phone.PDAs are set to automatically sync with email servers and connect to the internet without any input from the user.

Thanks! That was probably one of the best stated responses to this question in quite a whilte. A lot of times I see childish remarks instead of just answering the question. Thanks so much for a breath of fresh air!

I'll just add in that it's important to get the right package for the right phone. Blackberries have their own connect plan. It's all designed to accomodate the data streams that each phone uses.

At my place we have a binder of phones and plans that go with them that helps the customer understand what is available for each handset.

Nokia 6102i, Motorola V557, Samsung C417, RAZR all are recommended for the Media Net packs.

SE 300i, LG CU 500, LG CU 400, Samsung Sync, Samsung D807 all are recommended for Media Max

you still sell the v557?

why is the 807 and 300i recommended for a media max? what makes them so special?

i take it by media net packs you are indicating(Media Basic and Media Works).

The thing that makes me laugh is the fact that the blackjack is not loaded with windows mobile, but with the windows smartphone software....the device is not a PDA, it is a SMARTPHONE, and therefore should only need smartphone connect....

A PDA like 8525, or 750 according to the packages should recieve the PDA connectr,

The thing that makes me laugh is the FALSE ADVERTISING......

Cingular has recently fixed this i believe but if you would look at the description of what each package would get you, it would describe the media bundle as giving ...

The V557 continues to be the "work horse phone" for us. It's profitability is great and it's an ideal phone for customers upgrading from older TDMA and GSM phones. It's also proven to be very rugged. I still keep mine as a backup for my StarTrek.

I would like to see Cingular/att streamline the media packs. Make it easier to sell and to explain to the customer.

I haven't worked for Cingular in a year, I just provided an answer to a question that I knew the answer to. I agree, the responses from Cingular are confusing, and each package needs a better description/justification and a change in price structure. However, since data also happens to be a major spectrum drain, and the cost of providing these services are so high, not likely to see it any time soon.

If you don't care about the mail in rebate, any "Media Max" plan will give you unlimited access to the internet from your Blackjack using HSDPA. I've done it many times, it works just fine.
