I've had a lovely time trying to get my LG C1300 phone replaced (it won't charge anymore). Rather than taking it to the store and handling it as I used to be able to, you now have to talk to 10 people over the phone and have them send you a replacement, which sucks. The replacement phone doesn't work either, but for kicks and giggles I put the SIM card in my old Nokia 6340i, which worked wonderfully. If the next replacement LG doesn't work, can I just put my SIM into the 6340i, or will Cingular want to ding me for it being a GAIT phone? Thanks.

Ahhh, XBM at its finest! 😁

Of course Cingular had told me it wouldn't work for GSM only, just for the GAIT plans. You're right, it does work, as we found out when we put the SIM card in it last night.
But if I use this phone, can Cingular figure out which phone my SIM is attached to? If so, will they want to charge me for the GAIT plan instead of GSM only? Thanks.

Gait phones can use GSM plans... they just cant use North America Plans. Call a different rep.

Cain, I read in some past posts about how if someone puts a GSM SIM card into a GAIT phone, that they can incur roaming charges when the phone switches to TDMA. That was my main question, will there be more charges if I do this. I know it works because I tried it. But I want to know if I'll get hammered with extra charges for doing this. Thanks for your help.

If your on a gsm plan their is never roaming 🙂
even if you get billed it, they would take it off cause your on a roam free plan

You're right, GSM is never roaming, but in my area, they still offer GAIT plans, which are more expensive, so they might would want to charge me for that. Do you think that would be a factor? Thanks.

if you put your sim in another phone, they have no way of knowing. if your current plan is gsm nation you have nothing to fear.

That's what I was wondering, if they had any way of knowing. But based on my experience with them, they apparently don't know much of anything. Thanks!

To be honest the GAIT phone should not even be able to roam on TDMA w/ a GSM SIM in it... reason for this... the SIM card contains the activation info for the phone... Telling how and when to use the technology... a GSM SIM card will only tell the GAIT phone about how to use the GSM side... In theory the phone should not even know that TDMA exists... that's what makes the GAIT SIM's different... The GAIT SIM's OTA contains GSM info... then sends out a second OTA w/ the TDMA info on it... The phone will still work... It should just work on the GSM end though... Of course, this is the theory behind the GAIT system and how it was meant to be implemented... I have little doubt that there are ways around it... but for the most part that's how Cin...

Thanks for the info. I would call Cingular and ask directly, but after the incompetence with which they've handled my attempts to get a replacement phone, I doubt I'd get a straight, correct answer.

Thanks for your info. I mean no insult to you; I'm just not very happy at the moment with the company that I've been with for years and that used to have customer service but has chosen to jack me around repeatedly on this.

Just for kicks and giggles, I decided to call Cingular to ask them this question re: the 6340i and the GSM SIM card. The lady said, oh no, the GSM SIM card definitely won't work in the GAIT phone. I said well, I tried it and it actually does work. She said she doesn't know how. So there you have it folks!!

you could call 10 times and get the same answer to that question 🙂

Thing is not all reps now enough... Some of us reps (Check the posts or you may have talked to some)... actually care about the industry and phones themselves... and take it upon themselves to find out more than what's necessary... alot of reps simply do not know and do not want to know... That's why it's sad to say but tech issues... talk to tech... billing etc... talk to cust service... etc... Every now and then you may get a rep on the line that would be able to go above and beyond for you... The other day I helped a sys admin configure an auto alert between his alis e-mail within intranet w/ our system... did i have to? No. I just happened to know how... any other rep may have told him it can't be done or transf through tech. And i'm not...

Yes, I realize there are excellent CSRs out there, have even been helped by some. This makes me miss the real-person service of the techs that used to handle things even more. But this particular thing I'm trying to get done has been one fiasco after another. I'm actually pretty forgiving if the company will make things right. It's just that they don't seem as willing to do so as they used to. True, there are many great individuals who work for Cingular, it's just that the company has changed the way they do things, not for the better in my opinion (which differs from some others here and that's OK).
