Michigan (Metro Detroit) GSM coverage

I am an existing ATTWS customer using TDMA with a Nokia 8260. I live in Ann Arbor (but work in Southfield), and coverage is usually fairly good; some dropped calls, but what is most bothersome is only getting one/two bars in my home and often finding that calls have gone straight to voice mail. Here's my question: Is the GSM network in the Metro-Detroit area as good as the existing TDMA? I've several people at work who tell me to move over to Verizon. I also have several people who are happy with T-Mobile. ATTWS had the least attractive plans about 3 months ago, and now they have some of the best. Since I'm off contract, I can do anything. If I were to stay with ATTWS, I'd move to the GSM platform and get the Nokia 6800 using the Local...

ATTWS new rate plan rocks!

$39.99 1000 Anytime | Unlim N&W | L.D.
- Add on Line #2 for $9.99 (First 3 months free)
OMG, nothing like this ever existed when I worked for them.

ATTWS TDMA is great for me... it was horrid when I used the T68i (dropped calls often and horrible signal)... once I got my hands on the 3590 things were looking up. The 6310i is currently what I use and I LOVE this phone to death. Signal has never been bad for me... ever.

I go to college in Southfield so I know the GSM coverage there is good. Coverage is all along Southfield Freeway, I-75 upt o Flint (never been past there myself). I-96 all the way to GR (never past it myself). I-94 from Port Huron down to Detroit.

Can't say much for Ann Arbor as I am not...

Mycool:

Thanks for your comments. They are helpful. One question, though: Where are you getting the "$39.99 1000 Anytime | Unlim N&W | L.D." rate plan? The best plan I see is the Local Family Plan (GSM), 1050 min for $59.99.

One interesting thing is that the TDMA plans seem to be more expensive than the GSM plans. I work for AT&T Business and an AT&T strategy has always been to make the company directed platform (in this case GSM) more reasonably priced. The Shared Local (TDMA) is $60 for 500 minutes, while Family Local (GSM) is $60 for 1050 minutes...hmmmmm.

I was shopping at Sams Club and noticed a sign promoting it. I asked about it and I was told that it was $40/month for 1000 Anytime minutes. You could add another line for $10/month more and share the minutes. On top of that, the 2nd line is free for 3 months with a 2yr contract. Or something of that sort... This was last week I saw it.

Correction. I stopped by Sams Club again and this time the guy told me it wasn't with free nights and weekends... just 1000 for $40... damn!
