Curious about the upcoming change..

First off, hello!

I live in Albuquerque NM, and have been wanting Cingular service for sometime (thanks to all of the good things i have heard about it). So, i was very excited when i heard about the merger.

After a decent talk with a local ATTWS store, i decided to sign up, knowing that i may be able to transfer my account, etc.

However, the ATTWS service out here has been a little disappointing, and thus, brings me to my question. With the new acquisition of ATTWS, should users be expecting any changes in service area, in the near future? I mean, i get pretty good reception, but there are times when the signal (or perhaps the phone?) will tweak out (electric crackle, or i can hear a person, but them not hear me, etc), due to po...

My advice is to stop whatever account you've started and wait for the changes to start to come through before proceeding.

You will need to get a new phone to take advantage of any changes that may come around so my suggestion is to take your phone back cancel your account and wait about a month (that's when they have been saying day one...should be closer to 3 weeks now) and go back and get a cingular phone that will be able to take advantage of the "NEW CINGULAR" network and then try it out again.

Why would i need a new phone for anything? At most, i would ONLY need a new SIM card, but that is to be expected.

And closer to 3 weeks? more like closer to 9 days, if everything goes well.

so.. is there anybody that really knows please? 🤭

Unfortunaly noone really knows. They said "within 30 days from the FCC decision" in our merger training but cannot give anything else than that. One thing is they may give you a phone that is not 64K compatiable and then you will not be able to get the new 64k SIM. Not all phones are ENS (even now cingular has a few that are not). I don't believe the v400 is ENS compatable but don't quote me on that. Also Cingular is going to launch a boat load of new phones on day one. We probably won't know what those are untill 3 or 4 days before DAY ONE.

Any idea on the v505? I really like this phone, and dont have a desire to give it up later really...

Regardless of when the real merger is in effect, im still curious about my first question. Will the GSM service get better out here, or is it just wishful thinking?

sorry. The V505 is a AWS phone. none of the AWS phones are ENS capable. You will have to migrate to something like the v551 which looks comperable.

Do you have any more info on this "ENS" thing?

However, im guessing since you have passed over my real question, you dont know the answer, correct?

OH MY GOD I HAVE AN AMAZING IDEA! LEts wait till the so-called "Day one" actually happens and take it from there, this continual speculation and theory is rather aggravating, no one really knows for sure. (except maybe execs)

no nerve hit, its just people keep asking the same questions on here, on the phone, on the aws bulliten boards, on websites, EVERYWHERE. I understand the merger is a big deal, but I feel like I am in a theory class, because thats all I keep hearing.

ENS is enhanced network system. It's basickly the 64k SIM. the current SIMS cannot change from one network to another properly. They can only go to someone elses network if they cannot find the previous network at all. the new 64k SIM have ENS which alows them to switch to the tower with the best signal based on a prioraty assigned by cingular.

As for the second question weither it will impove. The best guess is in most areas it will improve but it a very area specific question. First these new ENS SIM's will alow you to pick up the best tower so that will be better. GSM has been improving in leaps and bounds ever since april and now you will be able to access the cingular network as easly as the AWS network. Some area's that ma...

Thanks for the explainations! ENS sounds pretty nice (and is very logical).

Right now, Albuquerque has no Cingular service.. everything is ATT or T-Mobile. Im hoping that since Cingular is truly nation-wide now, that service across the west will improve.. just a hope though.. :">

I wouldn't hold your breath for Day one but cingular is now going to be a heavy hitter and going to be able to spend money on upgrading their systems so hopefully in the future they will begin to cover more of NM.

Oh, dont get me wrong.. i know a change wont happen overnight. But, im thinking that a few months down the line, things might change for the better (i.e., stop having VZW being the dominant carrier out here.. bloody expensive stuff)..
