Europeans have it all over us when it comes to cell phones. They pay about the same price each month for their wireless services, but that’s where the similarities end. Their phones do more and Europeans do more with them -– more messaging, more use of online services and, of course, making and receiving more phone calls.

There’s a good reason for the difference -- their service is way better than ours. Through all my travels -- in major cities, on highways, on country roads and even “the middle of nowhere” -- my cell phones (I brought a few to test) always worked. Yeah, I remember reading this article when it first came out awhile back. There was a pretty good discussion about it over at wirelessadvisor.com:

A lot of ppl concluded that the guy who wrote the article was pretty uninformed. For one, its easier to have good coverage in Europe due to population density. America has a lot of vast empty spaces with few ppl in it, Europe, not so much. Also, going to one standard (i.e. following the government-mandate European model) wouldn't really help anything... look at a market like South Korea, one of the most advanced wireless markets in the world. Are they one standard? Nope, CDMA and GSM co-exist very happily.
