Verizon Class Action in Wall Street Journal
The heat is really turning up on Verizon now. The six column article, among other things says:
"Ms. Raney of Verizon Wireless notes that other carriers sell Bluetooth phones that offer only some of the Bluetooth features. But Cingular, the largest U.S. wireless carrier, accepts its phones with the full Bluetooth function the phone makers intended."
Hello, Verizon, can you hear us now?

NEW YORK, Jan 13 (Reuters) - Verizon Wireless customers are suing the mobile service provider, claiming that it is selling a cell phone with fewer Bluetooth short range radio features than they expected, the plaintiffs' lawyer said on Thursday
According to the lawsuit filed in California, Verizon Wireless, owned by Verizon Communications (VZ.N: Quote, Profile, Research) and Vodafone (VOD.L: Quote, Profile, Research) , excludes some common Bluetooth features in the v710 phone from Motorola Inc. (MOT.N: Quote, Profile, Research) .
Bluetooth allows wireless links, within about 10 meters, between gadgets such as phones, computers, printers and headsets. The li...

Don't you mean join "in?" Touche.
If you dont like the crippled bluetooth, show VZW by not buying the phone, or using the service. VZW didnt force you to do either of those things....

The issue it that VZW wants everything to go over their CDMA network even when it doesn't have to, so they can collect a fee from you.
Take a picture of your kid and send it across the room over Bluetooth airspace to your wife.
Fee to Verizon or no fee? That is the crux of the suit.
Again, no oe forces you to get service with Verizon Wireless, or to use the phone's they make available.

How is that a crux of a suit? It's Verizon's network, they can do as they please. If you dont like the way they do it, then you should choose another phone/wireless provider.
Again, no oe forces you to get service with Verizon Wireless, or to use the phone's they make available.
This way of thinking is what's gonna hurt VZW in the long run.
I chose to switch to Cingular, I bought a Moto V551. I have a fully enabled bluetooth phone, and even thought I still haven't been able to use OBEX to send pictures to another phone (I haven't figured it out yet, 😛 ) I VERY happy with it.

That's just it! Bluetooth is not on Verizon's network.
Bluetooth uses the same frequency band (2.4 GHz) as 802.11b wireless networks. Like millions of people have in their homes and at "hot-spots".
It doesn't have a damn thing to do with the Verizon CDMA subscriber network.

No!
It's verizon's perogative on what phones to offer and what features they will have. If you are looking for that feature, you shouldnt buy that phone. If VZW do...

Verizon has not forced you to start service with them, nor have they forced you to purchase this particular phone. They also did not promise you in your contract that they would make a phone with this feature available to you.
You're right. But they did say they would fix the phone, and so did Motorola. So I kept the phone and the contract. Now it is too late to cancel.
Check out these links and tell me how long it takes to patch OBEX into a phone.
I have dozens of email from Verizon and Motorola promising that the disabled Bluetooth would be fixed, since August 2004.
Here is one:

All the e-mails state is that they have scheduled the fix, and one of the them even states that the schuduled time is not a guarenteed time frame.
If it never happens i would think you would have good cause to be let out of your contract without ETF.
If it does happen then they have met the only obligation they set for themselves with that e-mail.

Just so you know, the upgrade patch is available through Motorola on their website. You need Mobile Phone Tools 2.0 (I believe that's the software version, it's the latest software.) It's around $50 or $60 and includes the data cable, dialer software, phoneboook software. So if it's crucial to have the bluetooth enabled ASAP there's your solution, otherwise you can wait for VZW to offer the upgrade patch for free.
You can't flash a phone with MPT.
What is the URL link to the firmware?

We are beyond all of the purchase & return decisions. How do you explain why it takes so long to patch the repair into the phone?

I don't and I can't.
My guess? Saying "we'll do something about your problem some day" but having no concrete obligation to actually do anything on any specific day is consistant with Vzn's pattern; make it sound good but commit nothing. It's pure pr/marketing speak and therefore nearly worthless.
Just look at the painful parsing of those Vzw defenders in this very thread. The logical extension of what they're saying i...

1) Verizon clearly states that VIA bluetooth you can communicate with your PDA or Computer AKA "FALSE ADVERTISING".
2) Motorola produces the phone and Verizon changes it for their own benefit of making money. But you can't sit there and charge someone or disable a feature on a phone such as the bluetooth technology when it doesnt even use your own network or yet alone belong to them. This also goes back to number 1.
3)Verizon being 1 of 3 CMDA companies (US Celluar and Altell) in the US who currently sell this phone is the only one to disable the bluetooth capabilities in order to give their customers no choice upon which they want to get ringers, send pictures, videos, or data. If the phon...

Compare this to the outrage over lack of WiFi on the BB Storm!

Couldn't resist. It's like Deja Vu all over again. Remember the V710 and the lessons learned about crippling 'off network services', and look how many people are outraged again 4 years later.
It's funny how the arguments are basically the same, "Vote with your pocketbook", "You don't need any other network except the carrier network", "the OEM didn't build that feature into this phone, so it's not really crippled", "Return the phone if you don't like it", etc., etc.
How all of that negative publicity is really helping Verizon is beyond my wildest belief. I haven't seen one credible post that jus...

people need to stop whining about this already. i can't believe that this is still an issue with VZ
The reviews are bad on the Storm for many other reasons, mostly, I thionk because the transition to all-touch virtual keypads is not easy for most people.
The phones with WiFi that verizon sells typically don't sell as well as the other smart phones, and other features (windows mobile, touch screen, etc) are often cited as reasons why that phone is purchased.
As wifi becomes something more customers demand, more phones will feature it. Remember, it wasn't too long ago when wifi on computers was a "luxury" feature, and having a camera on a cellphone was something exciting.
