Verizon will buy Alltel
The Wall Street Journal reported that private equity firms might be looking to buy the wireless operator
Alltel Corp. (AT) shares rose on Dec. 29 after an article suggested that private equity firms might be circling the wireless operator as a potential takeover target.
"Wall Street is buzzing about a possible deal and private-equity shops are already exploring the idea," the Wall Street Journal reported, citing people familiar with the matter.
The newspaper noted that Alltel has a market value of $21.7 billion and a debt load of just under $3 billion. Meanwhile, the company is a pure cellphone operator, having recently spun off its slow-growing landline division, and it has low debt rel...

Among the potential strategic buyers of Alltel are the telecom Sprint Nextel Corp. and the cellphone giant Verizon Wireless, a joint venture of Verizon Communications (VZ) and Vodafone Group PLC (VOD), the WSJ said.
I seriously doubt Sprint/Nextel is in play for it, they have enough on their plate right now.
I think they should buy Alltel and change their name to Alltel. Even after they work out their issues, their name has been damn near destroyed. The crazy thing is that they actually offer a nice product. I use their laptop card for data and they blow everything else I have used out of the water.

I agree. Verizon is a much better match.
If it were to happen, it would give Verizon plenty of cellular band licenses that Alltel has, though some of those cellular licenses would have to be divested. I wonder how many PCS licenses Alltel has for areas that haven't been built out yet? Verizon is definitely looking for more PCS licenses, especially for areas that they don't have any, or not enough.
One thing I believe would change though, would be in the central part of the country, and that would be Verizon wanting to turn off the GSM network that Alltel built out (and added from the Western Wireless buyout).
But one thing I might see if Verizon did buyout Alltel is that this might be a w...

Although, if Verizon were to buy Alltel, the FCC might mandate that they divest the GSM spectrum and sell it to a GSM carrier like T-Mobile.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but in areas where there is no GSM service, Alltel built out their GSM network using the same licenses that they use for their CDMA network, by simply splitting the spectrum between the 2 networks? That's what I'm assuming they did in areas they built out, and possibly by the old Western Wireless too.
Regardless, any areas that Verizon would have to divest, if they were to acquire Alltel today can be acquired by anybody. The Western Wireless network in Arkansas was acquired by Cingular, and Western Wireless was CDMA, whi...

vz taking over alltel would be my dream, allowing vz to basically take over MI and expand their coverage.

Get with the program man! It's not 2005 anymore... Maybe you need to start reevaluating your statements about Cingular/at&t, because those quoted above are outdated. Perhaps you know it, but you just want to stay in denial... Cingular/at&t is not inferior to Vz in anyway. Quarter results will prove (once again) all of you wrong...
All this "we got more retail users" is Vz's only way to put something out there to make it still sound appeling to users. Cuz apparently "The Network" is not enough... 🙄
P.S Start getting used to the at&t name. It won't be cingular for ...

Not only would it establish a true dominance in the industry but it be a huge blow to Ed and Stan's ego's and they couldn't do much about it. Coming fresh off of several buying sprees and mergers of their own, I doubt they have the resources to pull off another one in the near future. Besides, not much is available.
There is no "for sale" sign in the front yard of T-Mobile USA. Deustche Telekom's mobile division chief Rene Olbermann told a meeting of the American Chamber of Commerce that the company plans to invest in 3G in the US, and said the unit's importance to Deustche Telekom's bottom line "is beyond d...

The possibility that Verizon Communications would want to ditch the marriage with Vodafone after an Alltel buyout would be much higher, and Vodafone isn't willing to pull out of the US market without a viable (GSM) re-entry option. That's been apparent in everything that has happened since the AT&T Wireless buyout.
All in all, it's going to be hard fo...

That is just my 2 cents.
Any Contradictions?

I hope this actually happens. I have two friends who live in Nebraska who have Alltel. I would be able to call them mobile to mobile whenever I want.😁
Nothing personal but when i read this post all I could think is do they also have a sheep you miss a lot?
