If I know more than you....

...Please don't try to BS me and sell me a phone. I went to a VZW store near me cuz I was ready for my NE2 and I was looking the 9900. I had done my homework, as I do before purchasing any new phone because odds are I'm gonna have it for awhile. Well, I walk in, sing in and wait for someone to help me. I was looking at the 9900 and someone finally came over. He looked like he was about 13 and had 3 phones hanging from his belt, so I thought, OK...he's young and he's obviously into phones, hopefully he can help me. I started asking questions about the EnV, and the first couple, I already knew the answers to, but I wanted to know if he knew. The first question I asked was if you could use the speaker phone with the phone closed. He sai...

no I agree with you. I would rather someone tell me I don't know but I will find out then just tell me what I want to hear or lie.

Well, I've met some of the sales reps who knew what they are talking about, but more that don't. I don't understand...I am a phone junky...that's why I took a job at a cell phone company...if this isn't something you care about, then why are you doing it? And even if you don't care about phones that much, it is still your job and you should ALWAYS know more about them than I do. I mean, I'm still going to buy the 9900, it's an awesome device, but I don't want to reward that kind of behavior...I'm not putting down VZW cuz I'm sure that sales reps are the same across the board...I just want to buy my phone from someone who deserves it. I'm kind of interested to see what VZW store reps (or any store reps for that matter) think about not know...

Don't we deserve to buy a phone from someone more knowledgable than us? Just my thought....

Well at least someone who knows if you can use the speaker phone when the damn phone is closed, i mean all you have to do is look on this site for five minutes and get familiar with your product. I never even bother trying to talk with them its just to lame I just walk in and tell them what I want and I'm not interested in discussing it.

Why in the world would you guess about something like that anyway? If it didn't and the customer bought the phone, you would have alot of explaining to do...

I would take the "I am not really sure but I will find out" approach.

I sell two different services with two different plans/order entry/data features/phones/etc. I am not the typical indirect that stocks four or five different phone models...I try to keep at least one of everyone and a bunch of the popular ones in stock. With all the phones it is hard to keep up on each and every one. Especially when I am doing ordering/sales/store taxes/deposits/pay roll/etc. But I wouldn't outright lie and say I "know it does" when it might not. But I also don't have the capability to k...

anyone over the age of 16 should know that answer. Did you ever think that you may have more technical knowledge than the sales rep? Maybe you are more savy than he is on the various functions of the phone.

Take a car saleman for example.....these guys are the scum of the earth. They dont have to do any selling at all. You walk on the lot interested in a car that you have already done research on. You know you want it, but its just a matter of price. The salesman does nothing other than ask "what do you want to pay for the car" He then goes to the manager, and hopefully comes back with a price you will pay...they do absolutely nothing!

So weather or not the cell dude knows anything about the phone or not, its immaterial. If You want th...

But that wasn't even the whole point...he didn't know that I knew about the phone...and he lied to me. Do you think that's right? And even though I did my research, I'm not conceited enough to think i know EVERYTHING there is to know about the phone, and I was hoping to go into a store and talk to someone who did. That's my only point. And at cell phone stores, it's not like used car dealerships...there is no negotiation of price, and they are being paid to be the experts in that field. And they're not (some of the time). And he lied to me. Without hesitation. Am I the only one who has a problem with that?!

Not attempting to take up for the sales rep, but where as you have time on your hands to research it, does not mean he may have yet.

Few things here:
1. The phone just came out
2. That is not the only phone a rep is focusing on, there are many more as well as many that have just been released.
3. Stores are busy/overwhelmed on normal days let alone this time of year.
4. Don't think they are given time in their schedule to "research" every phone. (If busy open to close hard to have that time.) Cant blame the rep for that, blame may lie elsewhere...

Now granted he should not have responded as previously posted, should have checked. Since you stated you worked for wireless provider, you should understand the massive amounts of INFO o...

qtgirl you are absolutely right. I have Verizon service too and I used to work for that yellow and black company. I don't have any real problems with Sprint or Verizon but I do have a problem with Reps giving out bad information. It is OK to admit that you don't know something, if that guy doesn't know he should say, "I'm not sure, let me ask someone." Under no circumstances should the rep guess or lie.

I was actually in the other day at a verizon store upgrading phones and I had a guy do the SAME thing... He thought he was smart, not knowing that I had already done the research and knew more about the 9900 then he could possibly know. I asked him a question about buying 1 razor and getting 1 free on an upgrade and he told me flat out ...

I absolutely agree!! I do not expect every sales rep to know EVERYTHING about EVERY phone. That would be impossible...but I HATE being lied to. It makes me wonder about the people that don't know as much about their phones...what kind of service are they receiving, and don't even know it?! I mean, I get tons of cust's calling in telling them that a store rep told them this and that, and i normally just roll my eyes, thinking, yeah right. But after my recent experience, I'm beginning to believe some of them. I mean, I haven't been on the customer service end for long (and I already understand why so many of us drink, I don't...but I'm beginnging to consider it...), but being on the customer end isn't always that great, either. I don't ...

Customers can be pretty bad as well. In my short tenure with Sprint I was threatened, provoked, pitted against other stores, etc etc...So I know how it can be on both sides.

As most of the replies have stated, you are correct. The person should have said "I don't know, let me get the answer". Most of the reps I work with or have worked with really don't give 2 craps about the phones and the finer details. They know which ones come back a lot and they know the ones that we don't have problems with.

Most people do just enough work not to get hassled. Is it cool, no. The tools are certainly available to all VZW reps to learn about any of the devices and services. If the reps choose not to utilize them...well you can lead a horse to water, but...

As most of you know, reps don't make any money on phones. IF all my guys sold was the LG 8300 all day, everyday, with an occasional blackberry/treo thrown in, I'd...

I agree with you 100%. There's no problem with a rep not knowing a lot of technical details. There is a BIG problem with him flat out lying, claiming he does, and then you finding out after the purcahse, that what said works, doesn't.

I'm wondering if there is any advantage at all to purchasing our phones and renewing our contracts at a store instead of on-line today? So far I've been going to the local store, but its getting to the point that there doesn't seem to be any good reason to.

A big thing is many of us want things ASAP and don't want to wait for it to be shipped. Other than that, online is pretty much just as good as going into a store.

100% agree with you... It's worse working with people like that because if you're a good employee you're the one that ends up fixing stuff for the customers they messed up. Thankfully there is no union so it's easy to get rid of those folks... I've seen many come and go because they lack good work habits.

Getting a phone in the store is MUCH better. I purchased one online and had to send it back. It took 3 months to get credited back for the phone after I returned it. Many phone calls to try to get the situation straightened out. When you get one in the store and have a problem with the phone it is replaced INSTANTLY. On line---my experience---with lots of phone calls and also reactivating your old phone---you are LUCKY if it happens in 3 months. Online---BE AWARE--bad phone---lemon phone---phone you just don't like---you get to wait 3 more months for another phone!!!
