My January 2007 issue of Consumer Reports arrived in this morning's mail. In it they published the results of their September 2006 online survey of 42,921 CR subscribers, reflecting those respondents' overall satisfaction with their cellular telephone service in twenty major metropolitan areas.
Very interesting reading.

🤣 Not another show down of Consumer Reports
If you are in need of new service ask your neighbors.

yeah i agree i don't care what it says
...
Am I the only one who finds it funny that while he's trying to stir up reactions in both the Cingular and the Verizon forums, the only reaction he's getting is disdain and apathy from both groups?
...
Yup... again. It's a new survey, one year later.
...
surveys are worthless. just as much as movie critics.
...
OK I couldn't resist I took the wife to Barnes and Nobel and picked up the issue, here is what is says.
We've listed these five major wireless carriers roughly in order of their overall performance.
Verizon
How Good
Consistently a top performer in this year's survey and in our earlier ones. Also among the better national carriers in its responsiveness to customer questions and complaints.
Alltell
How Good
Consistently a top performer in all three metro areas where we had sufficient data to rate it. Notably good for both connectivity and customer service, including helpfulness in responding to questions or complaints.
T-Mobile
How Good
A solid performer in almost all of the metro areas where we had suff...

and this info is any more useful then a book to tell you how to take a sh*t? Everyone is different. I won't get into who is better but the one I have I have had for 6 yrs or so and had no problems!! I had them all.
...
Sure it couldn't possibly hold any truth to it, unless Sprint was on top then it would mean something to you right 🤣
...
no not at all. I think the top 3 have great service. Verizon can't be beat in their native markets. Sprint is great in big cities and major interstates and has the most roaming partners. Cingular has awsome coverage too. It all depends on were you live and what you are looking for. You will never here from me that one company is the god of wireless!!!
...
I know I'm just playing- why you think Sprint is still ranking so low? I've had verizon for ten years and Sprint for just about a year I'm not experiencing any major problems with Sprint- the only thing I have really noticed is the typical indoor coverage compared to my verizon phone. I take both when traveling and constantly comparing the two. I got hooked up on that SERO program so I'm lovin their data...anyways they seem to me to be ranking lower then they should.
...
Sprint has a bad name. People hate the name. I was one of them. I hated their long distance service and their home phone service. People hated them when they started their pcs service. They haven't been able to shake it. When they came to Beaufort SC in 2000 I tried them as they were the only real choice. But I am glad I did as I have been very happy. What i get today would cost me 185 a month with verizon and I pay 85. That doesnt not mean the other is better.
...
I don't think you can blame it all on their name, what kind of numbers were they pulling before this merger it wasn't verizon cingular good but it wasn't that bad, certainly more the 200k- This merger must be hitting them hard. They got hella spectrum and all kinds of potential but they got to pull their heads out and get it together.
...
I think your right to a extent. Their marketing and name sucks. They put a commercial look the most powerful network and show a katana that isn't even EVDO. I have a katana and its a good phone but don't advertise power vision with a non power vision phone. The one thought that crossed my mind when I heard they were merging was why? What does sprint gain? NOTHING. They take on the debt of nextel and the cost of migrating them. Verizon had the problem when they went through there merger also back in 2001 I believe. Time will tell.

What is everbody's opinion about the Zune's chances to make a dent in IPod's market share ? ? ?
Yeah, I'm aware this is a little off-topic for this forum, but it's a little more interesting than the Verizon vs. Cingular; Verizon vs. Sprint; Verizon vs. whoever debate that comes up in this forum a million fuggin times a month ! ! !

Well I am a not a fan of either (I have a Zen Micro 4 GB) but I still prefer iPod over the Zune.
...
The Zune is already a flop and will never steel away any real market share from the IPod, the Ipod is sexy and will continue to be the winner.
The Zune is ugly and the only real cool part they don't seem to be advertising.

NONE whatsoever!!! 🤣 The "Zune" has a horrible name, looks hideous, and it's too late in the MP3 player game. My prediction: FLOP! The only people who will buy a Zune are the Apple haters...
...
the zune immediately jumped to #2 in MP3 player sales when it first came out (www.macnn.com). It will never reach Ipod status, but I think it is the most serious competitor to the IPOD regime. I am a mac user, so I would never switch, but if I had a PC, I would definitely consider it. I like the way the zune will allow you to watch videos in widescreen, something that IPOD does not offer. Give the zune sometime, i really think it will be a contender.
Word on the street is that the new IPOD will have a much larger screen and possibly a touch screen interface. stay tuned...
Chris
...
Great! So they sold almost 1,000 units in less than a month (estimate) and now they are #2...
Who bought any other kind of MP3 player anyway?
...
Yes you can go ask 5 or 50 people about their experiences with a network, or you can spend 15 minutes with CR and probably feel good about making a decision based on their reviews.
What did CR do? They asked the same question that's asked 100's of times on PhoneScoop- Which service is best??? And readers replied.
Before there were "forums", epinions, ZNet reviews, dpreview (excellent), stevesdigicams, etc,etc,etc,etc...
there was Consumer Reports!!!!
...
F** CR. I can w*** my *** with their "reports" Why don't you ask around for yourself? ASK plp with T-Mo, Sprint, and Cingular (big 4 of course) Cuz who has Alltel anyway? Ask them what they think of their service, last time they dropped a call. etc etc... You'll see the CR "results" are rubbish...
...
Have you actually read the details of the article before making such pronouncements?

You don't have to read CR to know what they said. They ALWAYS say Verizon is the best.
They don't do any scientific studies. They don't even hire anyone to do studies... They poll their own subscribers.
I'm not a big fan of Cingular, BUT they are THE only company to offer independant test studies that show they offer the best network.
Consumer Reports sucks.

PS... Polling 42,000 people(who may or may not be actual cell subscribers... they just subscribe to CR) is like polling one cell user out of 10,000.
...
PS: asking 42,000 people is as accurate as any poll.
BTW: how much credibility can the WEB have when people with bad experiences are more likely to post their opinions than people with average or great experiences?
A service or product may have 10 poor reviews out of 20 (looks like 50% of everyone is unhappy!) when in fact the % may be only 1-5%.

I'd have to disagree with your 1st statement.
They didn't ask 42,000 cell subscribers. They asked 42,000 Consumer Reports subscribers. For the last several years, CR and it's readers have been very biased towards Verizon. You can't ask 42,000 Vanilla Ice Cream fans how they feel about Chocolate Ice Cream and get a good idea of how good Chocola...

However, the second point is good for people in the same area when it comes to helping decide which carrier would be best for them.
Among many other things like phones, plan offerings, what network their friends/family are on (unless it's T-Mobile..lol), and comparisins of the actual coverage maps for that area.
And I do have to say it, eventaully everyone gets upset at their carrier or becomes unhappy for whatever reason. (Big reason everyone has tried several carriers at least once. Kind of a vicious never ending cycle.)
Mine was the lack of coverage in areas of Bellevue/Redmond when told there was great reception. No longer that unhappy since I finally got the truth from a rep.
Now if only I could get the bluetooth headse...
