when is verizon gonna offer a "rugged" phone

gonar

Aug 25, 2006, 12:25 PM
my wife hasn't met a phone she can't destroy.

she drops them, drop-kicks them, plops them in a sink of dishwater and just generally abuses them. (my phone looks new after 2 years, hers like you took a belt sander to it after 6 months)

I heard a rumor of a water-shock-resistant phone coming from verizon (GZ? maybe the casio GZ?)

to my thinking any phone that can't take a few drops and the occasional 5 second oops dunk in the bathroom sink should be considered defective, but apparently the cell phone companies go out of their way to make sure most phones die unter these circumstances (hmmm, cell phone insurance revenue anyone?)

anyway, back to my original question, when is verizon going to offer a phone that my wife will have a har...

with the quality of nextel service around here, that would be like not having a cell phone at all.

why dont you teach your wife how to take care of electronics instead of crying about insurance scandals.

LG, Samsung, Motorola, Nokia, ETC have nothing to do with Lockline-Asurion insurance.

Verizon Wireless has nothing to do with Lockline-Asurion insurance.

they are all seperate companies and there is not some big scandal to make Legacy Locklin-Asurion rich. a cell phone is a piece of electronic equipment. why doesnt apple make ipods able to swim? then you could listen to music under water??

sorry for the rant, to answer your question there is not a release date on the GZ so I dont know the most durable phone we have currently is the moto v325 but no phone is waterproof.

heres a hint. Dish time is not talk on the phone...

a. you must not be married 🙂

b. if you think verizon doesn't get paid a vig for every phone insurance policy sold in it's stores (not to mention probably a commission for the salesman), you're high.

c. there are many ways for a phone to end up in a sink that don't involve talking on the phone while using the sink, for instance, my wife was in the bathroom, put her phone on the counter while washing her hands, then bumped the phone into the full sink when the tried to pick it up and missed (guess you've never heard of clumsy).

again, back to the point at hand, I had heard the GZ was water resstant at least. if it's the casio GZ (is it? or is it something else? if so, what?) they claim it is on their (casio's) website.

Although I agree that phones could be made a little more rugged in general, you C response points it out. If you wife had an accident with the phone, it shouldn't be covered by warranty. Should it survive a storm if its in your pocket, sure. should it be able to take a drop from waist high, yes. should it survive a trip into the crapper, not so much.

as far as companies making money on full retail, if they make money on it, they sure aren't cutting me in. I sell a decent number of full retail phones (for all the reasons you've said and so many more) and it doesn't do anything but piss the customer off to pay that much. And although I don't think each handset cost $180+ to build, i think the first one they make costs a few million (with R...

In response to your B. comment. I work for a verizon wireless authorized agent and we DON'T get paid for selling insurance. It is the customers choose to take insurance or not, the employees don't care either way. We do think it is wise to take insurance. Tell the the customers are experience from customers not taking the insurance. If you are going to make a statement about how verizon wireless employees get paid make sure you know what you are talking about first.

hey good for you I just think it's kinda sad that you would rather watch a movie while camping then do camping stuff. I guess I'm just old. Personally I think my friends would stop inviting me to camp with them If I was bringing a DVD player or my lap top with me, it's just kinda stupid. I'll save watching movies for when I'm at home. But hey to each his own. 😢

joking about what?

that it should take a few drops and be at least as water resistant as the cheapest 50 cent watch?
I mean come on, it's a portable device, I've seen iPods run over by cars that work, a cell phone should stand up to being dropped when you pull it out of your pocket. that it should be water resistant enough to handle getting hit by a lawn sprinkler? (what, never been ambushed by the watering system at your company's building?

joking about verizon getting a vig from the insurance company for every policy sold? they would be morons if they weren't.

that they deliberately manufacture crap to get more insurance revenue? yes, I was joking about that, but certainly they make money off the replacement phone business and ...

You are very mistaken if you think that the store cost on a phone is vastly less than the full retail price on the sticker.

In some cases, its darn near identical.

gzone is water proof. was demo at some show. it was in a fish tank with fish swiming around it it it was obviously on.

the rumor i heard was it would take 6 to 9 months to certify the phone. its been almost 6 months. i've been hoping that some insiders at verizon would at least hint at a rough timeline.

i need a water proof phone. sometimes out get caught out in the woods and it poors down rain. i'm sorry but your chocolat phone is just gonna melt. and your fancy pda phone is gonna self destruct.

there is a market for these things. i expect them to be snapped up when them become available..

In his original post Gonar never said that he was owed a new phone. He merely asked a simple question;

"...back to my original question, when is verizon going to offer a phone that my wife will have a harder time destroying?"

For asking this simple question people are jumping on him like he is an unreasonable jerk. Verizon Wireless senior management understands that it is in their best interest to give the customer what they want. That is why they are pro-rating ETFs although many of the low level VZW employees in this forum have always argued that this is unreasoable.

Denny Strigl will give us, the customer, phones that are warrented against minor water damage and VZW will prosper. The low level employees who bitch about the jerk ...

I didn't read though all of these so if somebody mentioned it sorry for the repeat. There is a rugged phone, the kyocera 444s. It is the same as the push to talk version but comes without push to talk. This is a thick rubberized phone that you can beat the crap out of. However it will not be winning any beauty contest.
