Contract length using an existing phone

MrGooch

Aug 11, 2006, 2:00 PM
I added another line to my family plan and I didn't buy a new phone but instead used a phone I already owned. This was done at a corporate store and a now this line has a one year contract. Is this correct? Since I am not having to subsidize a new phone shouldn't this be off contract.

The sales guy was very indignant about the whole thing, at first he told me the phone wasn't E911 compatible, which I knew wasn't true. I guess I must have cheated him out of a commission, although this particular store has a reputation of bad service.

even though it was your own equipment you have to remember that you are PAYING FOR A SERVICE. so the only way for your phone to work is to pay for VZW service.

No, if you are signing on a device you have, there is no need to sign a contract.

1 question though... if you knew the store had a bad reputation, WHY DID YOU GO THERE?!? ๐Ÿคจ

I know its not fair but we have to do a minimum of a 1 year contract, there is no way to sign somebody up and do a "no contract"

My understanding of your situation is because you have "free IN calling" and unlimited nights and weekends you are receiving a "promotional" price plan. Just because you didn't get a disounted handset doesn't mean you didn't get a "promotion" requiring a contract. On the other hand, VZW doesn't offer a non promotional plan that I know of. You should still at least get the free or inexpensive handset and then switch online to your old handset. Self insured.

Actually their are "non promotional" plans, they basically just drop the night/weekend and IN calling. However I have no idea how to activate them or how to access them.

The OP already had a family plan. We have hand me down phones at our house. Just adding the existing phone as a $9.99 line is no big deal.

The place is close and I don't really care about the poor service and attitude, I can put up with it, I just can't bring my wife with me when I go there, she has no tolerance for it.

As stated by ??????? that you dont have to sign a contract when activating your own phone, that is not true. If you go on any post paid rate plan, get a phone from Verizon or activate your own equipment you must sign a one or two year agreement.
Only way not to be under contract would be to activate prepaid or easy pay.

Unfortunately to do any of the regular plans (not pre-paid) there has to be a minimum of a 1 year contract signed. However, at least in our market (IL/WI), when you start up a line of service with your own equipment you can still upgrade that line of service at any time. All the rep who does the activations has to do is either note the account themselves, or call in to have it noted that the particular line was set up with Customer Provided Equipment. This way if your existing equipment craps out on you, you are able to sign either another 1 or 2 year and get new equipment at the discounted upgrade rate, and get insurance on your handset.

Some representatives will sucker you in to signing a 2 year on your customer equipment, but if t...

they can usually researh the esn and find out that the phone was previously used as well, so if you do need an upgrade and they didn't note it you should still be fine.

Thanks for your response.

It is not the one year contract that bothers me but it is that fact that the phone cannot be upgraded for a year. I added the line for my wife's son who had moved in and he didn't have any money for a new phone the line was added, now he does but he can't get a new phone until the end of the contract even though I never bought a phone at the beginning.

I always suggest that a customer take the free/inexpensive new phone to start the contract and as someone posted previously, you are "self insuring" yourself. I would never trust that they are placing a "note" on your account that it is CPE and you should be eligible for upgrade if something happens to the CPE phone. (no offense to those who actually do notate these situations. I have just seen it backfire too many times.) I would also suggest maybe looking for another VZ store or Agent in your area if the one you are dealing with has a reputation of poor service.

mr gooch. find a DIRECT store in your area NOT a dealer or indirect, and speak to a customer service rep there or call customer service and explain the situation. you should be able to get a phone at the 1 or 2 year price with the signing of a new contract from that date. hope that helps.

Well, I'll tell you as the Store Manager of a Indirect location, we take all the extra steps for our customers. If they sign up and use a CPE, we call to have it noted. Then we hang up, and call back to have another rep verify it was noted properly. We're not lazy with our customers. And don't always count on Direct to be so thorough. I went through a headache with a customer earlier this week that started service 3 months ago at a Corp location. They suckered him into a 2 year contract on a CPE liquid damaged phone. The customer used the CPE because he was desperate for service, and didn't have the money at that moment to pay for a phone. It took me 2 hours, and 5 reps, but I got it taken care of. How many reps can you count on to ...

Whenever our store signs up a customer on their own equipment, we first off try to sell them a phone so that they do not have to put service on a used phone, but if that customer comes back within the first year of having the phone we will honor the discounted price on a new phone. We get paid the same amount of commission on a customer phone as we do when someone takes advantage of the discounted price, so that way the customer can always come back to us if they have a problem with their equipment and we can help. I was not aware of the early upgrade when customers used their own equipment, so that will be helpful in the future.
I also always tell a customer to go with a 1 year contract when they use their own phone, but I actually had a ...

The rep who told you you cannot upgrade for a year was wrong. If you provided your own equipment (or CPE - Customer Provided Equipment), you are not bound by the upgrade policy. You activated service without receiving subsidized pricing and thus you are eligible for it. If you purchase it for agreement pricing then you are bound to an agreement.

And honestly - if you are that bothered by the location but are still willing to go there, get results from your complaints by involving the store management. The managers are pretty well aware that their pockets are affected by their incoming traffic or lack there of...

Unlimited IN calling and unlimited N/W are PROMOTIONS which require a 1 year minimum term, if you dont want the one year you have to forfeit the promo minutes.

sorry but that is how it goes, and its not a vzw exclusive policy.
