looking to get a basic phone for my daughter for her birthday, want most bulletproof, reliable phone (but a real phone, not the mom, dad and 911 only phone)

don't really care about camera or features, other than a good phonebook and maybe speakerphone.

v325 is a really solid phone, but I think its more than $50. But paying a little more now, could say you more later if it holds up better. I think the LG8100 is on sale right now, check the price on that as well. Also, use the user reviews on this website, they can be pretty helpful.

lg5200/lg8100/moto 325/moto 325, all under 5o after rebates. I would choose the 326 or the 8100 if you are looking at durability as the main concern.

If you're looking for super durable (bulletproof) I'd go with the Samsung A630. It doesn't have an external caller ID but it's the phone I sell to construction workers and known butterfingers. This phone takes a beating. It does not have a camera but you said you didn't care about that. It does have a phone book and speaker phone. It's a nice little phone and I get few complaints about it. At my store it ranges from free - 30.00 (no mail in rebate) right now.
Most mid-range phones anywhere you go will be around $50.00 - probably with a $50.00 MIR making them free after rebate. Those will all have a camera on them and an external caller ID. If you go to a store a rep should be nice enough to show you all the phones they have available in yo...

the 5200 is a very good phone and i know right now its pretty cheap..here at my store it is 80 with all accessories and a 50 MIR...but i know from experience that it will also take a pretty good beatin..i work on cars and so does my friend that has one and they still work fine after all the abuse we put them thru smashing them on the ground and into cars as well as in car doors..all around good phone tho with few problems

personally i wouldn't buy a phone from one of my verizon stores, i'd get it from online...don't have to worry about waiting for the rebate.

Stay away from Samsung A630 if you have any plans to be in an area that has a weak signal. It will show a signal and yes you can take a call, but the audio you hear from the other side will be horribly clipped with the beginning and end of words being chopped off.

I'd recommend the Nokia 2128i.

Go to the Verizon Wireless web site and look at the current selection and pricing (pricing changes drastically and frequently). Choose all the models that are in your price range, then come back here to Phonescoop and review each one. Many of the high end phones that were $150 and up six months ago are now reasonably priced. There will be many new phones coming out in the very near future so the 2005 best sellers are now on sale. It’s a good time to buy!!! Another bit of advice, buying directly from Verizon web site gets you immediate discounts, no waiting for rebates. Your phone will usually be received within two business days of ordering.

I am a verizon wireless customer service rep in the southeast and i always see parents coming in with their children to get a phone, and the kid always ends up getting mad because they want the hottest, hippest, coolest phone out. i can personally say that most parents walk out being under control by their kid and end up with the samsung sch-a950. BUT!! if you are in it for the best phone..not the best look I would recommend the Motorola E-815.
