Digital Vs. Tri-mode

Isn't it true that an all digital phone will get a better signal than a tri-mode phone because it's not fighting between analog and digital?

it is true for marginal areas or areas were an analog tower is much closer than a digital, but you also have to remember if your ever in one of those scares exsisting analog only areas you wont have any service at all, most nokias have the option of being set to either analog only or digital only or both (most all other tri-modes will only either be both or analog only). I carry the 6255i for that reason, im all over the place.

I started using a Nokia 6256i as soon as they became available, and was very impressed with how clean the signal was, incoming and outgoing. I live in a non-Verizon area (Charlottesville, VA) and there is a great deal of rural area down this way, seemingly analog. I found I was dropping the occasional call because of the hard hand-off from digital to analog. Since my NE2 promotion was running out, I decided I wanted to at least try out the RAZR and see what kind of performance I would get in comparison. Well, there was no contest. The RAZR does NOT drop calls for me at all, period, unless I'm travelling through a mountain pass, like Afton Mountain on I-64, and you have to expect THAT to be the case. It is also common knowledge that Ver...

I can't tell you how many times a day I hear this from customers. They call customer service and are told that they MUST have a trimode phone. Needless to say the customer service employee does not know the area that the customer lives in. In our are there are no analog towers left. But customers are convinced that they have to have a trimode phone. I can assure you this, a trimode phone does not work and better in an all digital area than an all digital handset. I will be glad when the analog is all turned off so we don't have this great debate. If you look at the current inventory there are only 3 handsets that are trimode, the 5200, 4650, and the 325.

In my area, turning off analog is about the worst move Verizon could make. We have good digital service in town, but once you get about 5 miles north, you're SOL if you can't pick up an analog signal. It irritates me that they're turning it off. All of my business is going to go away.

Don't worry they won't be turning off your analog signal. It will be converted to digital. The plan with all wireless carriers is to turn the analog to digital or whatever they use. The FCC says they have to leave it on until the end of 2006 or early 2007 I'm not sure on the exact date of that. The bottom line is the old analog is not cost effective to maintain. It like maintaining an old 486 computer.

I realize that, but the analog signal wave travels farther than a digital signal. If they turn off the analog signal, the digital signal doesn't reach as far. There aren't towers all over the place up here which there will need to be if they shut off analog. It will be way more cost efficient in my area to keep analog signals instead of building new towers to support the digital only mindset.

If they can add new towers and get you digital, then let them. Don't worry yourself about their costs.
