Signal Boosters- Do they Work?

KLFloyd

Another Newbie question here...

All over eBay you can find people selling "Signal Boosters" those little flat stickers that you stick usually behind the battery of your phone and they supposedly allow you to be able to hold a signal better on your phone.

Perhaps a stupid question, but do these devices work? If so, can you suggest a reputable company from which to purchase a signal booster?

I know this sounds crazy, but I cannot hold a signal in my house. I just live in a dead zone. I usually have one bar of service on my StarTac and will drop a call after a few minutes if I don't go outside. But my father comes over and can chat away on his phone and hardly ever drops a call and he has one of those boosters. Do they have any effect?...

As a rep speaking with customers at Verizon for about 6 years, I have never had a customer tell me that they work. I have heard the opposite however. It is probably the phone. Motorola overall is known to drop calls more than other phones and the age of your phone is most likely complicating the problem even further. I'm sure you would be eligible for an upgrade and maybe even new every 2 (you would get the phone free) I would look into doing that instead of trying to get a booster. Try LG or Kyocera. In my opinion they seem to get the best signals. If you need analog in your area make sure you do choose a tri-mode. Hope this helps!

Even Radio Shack won't sell them, and they're not exactly known for treating their customers right.

please back up your statements with personal experience if your going to make a slanderous comment against a individual or company. Yes I work for the Shack and we are known as the place to go to get your questions answered for a reason, we take care of our customers and we get them what's right for their needs.

Just couldn't let that one slide,
Jason.

BTW get an external antenna, non-amplified, at a wireless retail store and that should help.

While it's POSSIBLE an external antenna might help, its not very likely. Antennas are desgned for optimal performance, and extending or enhancing them usually leads to WORSE performance, not better.

Katie,
Those silly little stickers only help on receive which is less critical than transmit.
They "fool" the phone into thinking there is more signal and so increase signal to the antenna by reflecting it back to the antenna.
They have a one size fits all thing going on which defeats the laws of RF physics.
If you are using 850 MHZ you need a longer antenna due to the wavelength than you do with 1900 MHZ.
There are quality external antennas that will connect to your phone and give you a 3db gain which is quite substantial.
Do not, I repeat, do not use a signal amplifier. They are illegal on the one hand and they can get your account shut down by VZW on the other. When you hit a CDMA cellsite with more than 600MW the system starts a...

These foil strips are on par with the "Traveling Medicine Shows" and Dream Away Diet Pills. Some of the fly by night companies selling this junk are under investigation. Having said this, I'd like to add (2) more points.

1.) Rick Brome really provides a beautiful answer to this question thru a link, it's worth while reading. His link is part of this discussion, it's in the traffic associated with this topic and thread.

2.) I have taken the time to read the Cell Phone Owner's Manual literally from cover to cover. There is alot of mandatory FCC information published in all these manuals dealing with the hazards of Cell Phone Radiation. Realize when you place that cell phone next to your head, it's a radio transmitter. Use those foil str...
