Are cell phone viruses a threat or a hoax?

I say this because as I have read in this forum people believe that Verizon sets up their restrictions to protect their customers from viruses. I am not trying to be ignorant, but I have not heard of a viruses existing on other networks let along verizons. However, if we all have @vtext.com address for text messaging, who's to say there is not already a virus out there that will just email them randomly. What I am trying to say is I think Verizon is just talking viruses so they can further keep their customers in the bubble that verizon makes with restrictions on installing programs and other features that do not interfer with their network. So here is my question, has anyone had a cellphone viruses, if so please share your experience? I...

Last year there was a virus that attacked GSM phones that had bluetooth. I don't remember the date it happened. I remembered that it had something to do with the user's phonebookbeing wiped clean. Also, I remember that some celebrity had her phone attacked...don't remember who though...

somewhat hearsay, but the problem with Samsung 650s getting that yellow string of burned out pixels someone told me was virus related. not too sure if i buy that or not. I would think that since a cellphone is basicly a computer dedicated to just voice/minor data it could get infected, same as any computer.

shouldn't verizon then just scan their network with anti-virus software instead of restricting their phones?

Wow, you seem pretty sure of yourself. But i think this was an informative question not a poll. Do you have anything to back that or is it just a guess?

mobile phones don't normally have the capability to transfer to correct file type for viruses.. nearly all viruses are ran through executable files (.exe).. part of the reason blackberries are considered so secure is because of their lack of ability to even receive executable files, unlike most other PDA's..

If viruses are a hoax or if they are real, should is the key term here, should a company restrict abilities based on this fear? If so, why don't they provide the security of virus checking the network they protect instead of building walls around it?

Well, from an IT point of view there are times when some of the systems where I am get hit. Last time was through AIM. People opened an IM, clicked on the link and wammo! I had to delete all references to the virus by hand. Search for the executable, delete the other files created, and restore the values in the registry of Windows 2k or XP. This one shutdown the ability to run task manager. After two days of this crap, Norton finally found a fix and added it to the virus defs....

Unfortunately in Qualcomm's case prevention has went too far....

Having "semi-legitimate" fear that Malware authors
will use their platform to author Malware for new generation phones they have restricted access to the development programm and instituted a millue of red tape surrounding it.

If you peruse the site, you'll also see the "GET Authenticated link" that invites you to read the operator guidelines, but only after you spend $400 (or more) with Verisign for a class 3 certificate.

Qualcomm also decided to offer "Operators" the option to lock-down other things in the phone besides the BREW apps (in...

Not a hoax, apparently its already a problem in other parts of the world.

Also remember hearin' about some bad folks over in Europe gettin' info they shouldn't (credit card numbers?) of off other people's phones through bluetooth.

They had to be in pretty close physical proximity though, and the people affected generally left their bluetooth 'on' at all times.

Well yeah but that is just user error not hiding their bluetooth function and also not realizing it. But that in my mind is not reason enough to restrict users, I mean clearly Verizon could cut a deal with an anti-virus service and hoard even more money that way

That doesn't have to be a virus, it's bluesnarfing and you can be over a mile away from the person invading your phone. I posted a question on this and the tech board to try to see if anyone knows for sure whether the crippling of Verizon's bluetooth will prevent bluesnarfing. I heard about it over a year ago, so I keep the bluetooth turned off on my phone. I don't keep credit card numbers in there, but I really do need to keep some of my contacts list private.

does your phone have a feature to hide your Bluetooth connection? I Have the Nokia 6256i and do have that feature, so my phone looks for the connections that I have ok'd and not vice versa. I am not sure if that helps, or if that mentioned in your other posts.

No, I just didn't turn it on or pair any devices to it. I wonder if it makes a difference if it's off/unused or if it's hidden.
