"Unavailable" Calls

Gayle Wallace

Oct 22, 2003, 2:32 PM
In the last two weeks I have received numerous calls from "unavailable". The calls will remain open with silence until I hang up. Verizon's official position is that there is nothing they can do to identify the caller. I really don't care who is doing this, but feel there must be a dept. that can contact the caller and ask them to stop. Anyone know how to cut through red tape on this one? I have recent data on exactly when the calls occurred.

"Unavailable" calls do not have any originating telephone number associated with them. It is stripped off either because the call traveled over MF trunking or was placed behind PBX or Predictive Dialer equipment (for example, telemarketers).

Only calls placed that appear "Blocked" or "Private" have an originating telephone number associated with them. The number is suppressed from appearing on the terminating Caller ID but can be obtained in cases of harrassment or emergency. Verizon is right, there is nothing they can do to identify the caller.

Verizon has no way to know who is calling you.
Even if we did we could not call that person to tell them to stop. What you need to do is contact your local police dept. and ask them to get in touch which VZW's Legal Dept. to see if a call trace can be done, so that legal action can be taken. However I do not think The police will really do anything about prnak calls. I think they will only concern themselves with Malicious calls...

Your best bet would be is to just change your number. You can contact customer service, and explain the situation, I am pretty sure they would wave the 15 dollar fee to change your number for that reason.

be aware as well, that no information will be given to you as the identity or number of the caller, only the police will get any information from a call trace.
