New PTT improvement???

ChrisSerra

Its about time that I purchase a new phone, and I am interested in the push to talk feature. The story that I get from customer support is that they are improving the service to be as fast as Nextel.

I have read that this service cannot be improved due to the type of technology used to create this service.

I am trying to get an honest answer from someone that has more knowledge than myself on this topic.

Thanks in advance,

Chris Serra

The fact remains that Verizon does not have the technology to make their PTT solution comparable to Direct Connect. Nextel's doing PTT with a 10 year head start...and they also have the rights to the best CDMA PTT solution (Qchat). As long as they ...

Is it not possible for another company to create a PTT solution similar to Qchat? Or would a solution similar to Qchat violate the patents held by Quallcomm?

How long does Nextel have the rights for Qchat?

I'm sure with a little ingenuity, it's possible. Unfortunately, that ingenuity hasn't struck with either Verizon or Sprint, as they use inferior PTT solutions compared with Nextel. As for how long Nextel (and Motorola) have the rights to Qchat? I have no idea...but I do know that Nextel wouldn't have secured those rights had they NOT planned on possibly entering the CDMA market and instituting this particular PTT solution.

Kodiak Networks has developed a push to talk product with interoperability between carriers. I believe Orange and Alltel have deployed it. Supposedly sub one second set up... Their product is capable of being deployed on CDMA, GSM, TDMA... czech out the link:

I think I remember reading from somewhere that Verizon was in talks with Kodiak to provide the rereleased PTT service. If I can find the link, I will post it.

If I had to take a wild guess then the Verizon PTT system is comparable to the program I use at home called TeamSpeak.

It's voice over IP. When someone is transmitting to me, there is a 1-3 second delay between transmit and receives. Alot of that delay depends on users, wireless speeds and the base station we are using.

You know I had training on Nextel but that was over 3 years possible 4 years ago so I cannot remember exactly how they explained their direct connect works..

All I know is that Nextel on IDEN with DC works beyond anything I've ever seen. As to the VoIP PTT with Verizon? Meh.. The jury is still out. Hey put it this way... When the PTT was developed from VZW it has a 15 second delay.. Now its what a 1-4 sec delay?

Well, if I were Verizon and this was feasible, I'd look into it.
