Verizon customer for 2 years now...Renewal questions
First of all, I have heard non-specific details about Verizon "crippling" or "locking" features on phones. I don't quite understand what this means but I would be rather insulted to find that a brand new phone I just bought was unable to perform certain options ...

As for the so called crippling, I don't really know what to say. I don't look at it that way. Verizon is making the phones do what they want them to do. Their bluetooth is basically only for headsets. You can't use it for tranferring files and things like that.
I don't think Verizon blocks anything as far as ring tones go. I mean whatever comes on the phone is what you get. Of course if you want more you need to use Get It Now to download them.
Insurance CAN be a good option. It covers basically everything. If you lose it, stolen, dropped, water, whatever. You're looking at $4.99 a month, plus a $50 deductible to use it. If ...

Have you used, or at least played with, the VX-8100? There are tones that have been ringtones on every other LG I have owned that are "Sounds" on that phone. And you are unable to use sounds as ringtones. Thus leaving you with crap for ringtones out of the box and no way to get better ones other than through Get It Now.
Greedy Bastards.

Yes, the 8100 is actually the phone I use. I guess I didn't really pay attention to that. I pretty much never use any of the standard ring tones that come on a phone. Who says that was Verizon's doing anyway? It could have been LG? I just use a data cable and Bitpim and put my own ringtones on the phone.
I will guarantee you VZW did it. To stop everyone from sending WalMart music clips to their phone and using them for ringers.
And just so you know, Verizon is in the place they are in because of the Get It Now people. It's either Brew or some company like that that they have a contract with. That contract is why things are the way they are. It pute a lot of limits on VZW.

That's exactly what I do. I don't know of anyway to just send them to your phone though. You have to play them and convert them in to an MP3.

Well, If you have any phone that is midi capable, you just save them as a .mid and email them to (Your Number)@vzwpix.com
And I know they are in that place because of contracts. I fully understand and accept that. They just need to stop making it worse by further constricting the abilities of ...

I am new to the site and was referred here by a Verizon rep when I went into the store to talk renewal and using my NE2 for a new phone. I spoke with him about the E815 and the 8100. He referred me to this site and suggested that I do more research on the two phones or I could choose to wait for 2 upcoming releases from Verizon. I've been browsing here throughout the day and you guys seem to really know your stuff! I have a request if anyone would like to give me some advice.

I have a co-worker who unlocked his lg8000 using those bitpim and data cable! 😉
And what exactly did he "unlock" on his LG 8000????
It does not have bluetooth, so therefore you cannot unlock that!!!
It didn't block any ringtones, so no need to unlock that!!!!
Do you know what you are talking about????

If you were in Ohio I would be glad to help.
What part of Ohio are you in?
another way insurance is useless is you can pay directly for a refurbashed phones for $50 and they will even replace your home and car changers included in the $50. i got this direct from verizon CS in writing mailed to me.
later
1) Verizon does indeed lock features that are intended to be included with the phones. I have to say, that does irritate me...Over $50 a month for a plan (with taxes, fees) and you're expected to pay even more for what you're supposed to be entitled to in the first place... I would like to be able to personalize my phone because that's part of the fun of having a phone that does everything but your laundry! Not too cool on Verizon's part...
2) Insurance is not necessary as long as you purchase with a credit card...Are you sure this covers all possible damage to the phone? It will be replaced at no charge?
3) Not much seems to be known yet about the LG 9800. Guess I'll have to anticipate the arriv...

First of all, I'm female thank you very much. Next, I missed the part where people replying to my first and ONLY post on this website constitutes "holding my hand long enough already." I thought the whole point of this forum is to provide education and assistance when it comes to a particular wireless provider. I had questions that I was unable to find answers for and I made it quite clear that any information would be greatly appreciated. So for someone who has not replied to me with any feedback whatsoever, you sure are quick to jump in and speak on behalf of others. Excuse me for my attempt to research a company I am going to be entering another contract with beforehand.

I have BOTH carriers Cingular and VErizon. IF you want better phones and more flexibility and you don't go to rural areas alot or live in a rural area, Try Cingular. All BT features are implemented, phones have IR, Much larger Data footprint, Cheaper phones used and a larger variety. But MORE dropped calls and more non service areas. Thats the real trade off.
If I were you I would buy a phone used and avoid signing a contract if you can afford that or stay month to month, try a Cingular phone for 30 days with a new number and compare. Thats what I did and ended up with both services at $39 each and am extremely happy and NEVER without som...
