Backup Phone- workable idea?

Hey, I'm switching to Verizon. Primarily because of the coverage. I really want to get the e815, I'm fairly certain. However, it does not have analog support, which blows, especially as (ideally) I would love to have a phone that also does GSM for when I go to Europe. Not As important to me as awesome service where I live, which is why Verizon over Cingular, and why the e815 as my phone over a tri-mode.

Now, is it possible to have a second phone, which I use as a backup phone, and activate and use it where I need analog coverage? I don't really want to pay $20/month for a second line, just want to do, basically, an ESN swap when neccessary, but I'm not sure how quickly those would take effect, or if Verizon would care about, potentia...

I'm not a techie so I'm not going to recommend a tri-mode phone but I can answer the rest for you. ESN changes happen all the time and the typical phone call takes about three minutes. We update the new ESN, walk you through the programming and do a test call. There's no cost to do this, and I've never seen or heard of anything that limits the number of times you can do this. As far as your back up phone working in Europe, you'd need a global phone to do that, and there are only two out there right now, and good luck finding them for cheap. Also, to purchase this backup phone, you will not be able to receive a discount from VZW unless you do open a second line, so you may want to check some other purchasing outlets. Make sure it's comp...

Actually, it is supposed to be $15 per esn change if your just doing because you want to changed phones, and not because the old phone was broken or something like that. It doesn't automatically add the 15 when doing the esn change so it is pretty much up to the reps discretion of whether to do it or not. He can also just change the ESN on verizonwireless.com, if he has registered his account there, and it doesn't cost a thing to do it on there.

I think it is mostly an East coast thing. I've had to call East coast for an ESN change and they mentioned that it would be $15. I think we will see this in the West area eventually. But it ESN changes will happen less with the new GPS compatibility issue.

😲

I'm intrigued, and will be checking this out further. However, one thing I must know, that a phonescoop comparison sheet won't tell me-

It uses GSM for travel to Europe and fun times. Now, Verizon's analog networks are in AMPS, yes? So it would still be considered a "purely digital" phone in that, though it's tri-mode, it will only work on the digital aspect of Verizon's network? Or am I wrong in that?

A Bit of education for the confused would be appreciated.

Good Call though, and thanks for the tip!

Also, since I'm too lazy to respond to the other bit of replies, thanks for the info! I have access to eRoes, so I could do the ESN change myself regardless- would that have any influence on the presence or absence of a...
