3G issue

Forgive me if already addressed (couldn't find anything via search). I have set my Preferred Network Type to WCDMA only (via *#*#4636#*#*) and my Droid X keeps switching back to CDMA auto (PRL) or it will be set to WCDMA and still connect to 1x. Can someone tell me what I am doing wrong??? Getting frustrated.

My workplace has extenders, which do not work for data, but I'm trying to force 3G only so that it does not switch as often. Kills my media streaming and battery life. TIA

I've never peeked into this menu on the DroidX, but I've seen it on my other Android phones.

WCDMA is not even present on this phone, so if you're seeing it, there's something wrong. WCDMA is another term for UMTS, which is implemented on GSM networks such as AT&T and T-Mobile. WCDMA is not found on a CDMA phone, despite the technical resemblance.

So, if you look at that menu, you likely see "CDMA auto(PRL)," "CDMA only", and "EvDo only" as options.

CDMA auto allows your phone to send and receive voice calls and data sessions as well as switch over to non-Verizon towers covered on your plan.

CDMA only, as I understand it, forces you into 1X.

EvDo only, forced you into EVDO, cutting off phone calls.

You see, 1X is what you...

Thanks for that explanation. I read on another board that WCDMA = EvDo. I have no problem with data only at work. I'm not answering the phone anyway!!! 😁

"1x works perfectly fine for that, has since 2004 when EVDO was launched, and will through the rest of this decade until 4G LTE takes over (and even then, possibly longer)."

I certainly hope so. I hope my Incredible lasts that long, too. Well, if not I will just make an insurance claim once a year.

I fail to see how my comment is indicative of that comment. In my area, 4G is doing just fine.

If your 4g coverage is down... DO REv a will take some time before the handoff is 100% there. thats all i was saying 🙂

I'm pretty sure that there never was an issue going from 4G(LTE) to 3G (EVDO - Rev A). There is/was an issue going from 3G up to 4G with the USB Modems, not sure about the thunderbolt.

Ya.. It has to do with the BSR (Better System Reselection) and the built in 2-3 min wait before the device rescans for another network/tower. Pain in the butt but I guess it is what it is right now. They say it is that way to preserve battery life. 👀

that hurts the customer's experience of course. yea i know about that whole thing. i havnt asked whether or not people are experiencing that for the 4g phones. again its premature i think. it doesnt preserve battery life but if verizon says that is must be true 🙂

Oh ya deff a negative cust experence. I would think though that if it was the same with the Thunderbolt we would have heard about it by now. Thundergate? 😉

hahah yea 🙂 LTE going to and from DO is going to be interesting. hopefully, VErizon implements it better than they are doing, but of course they dont have any choice as of right now.... maybe when they go to LTE as a whole and do VoLTE. anyway 4G is interesting 🙂
