I'm not aware of a $9.00 data package, but smartphones require a $30 data program that basically give unlimited web browsing, email and app usage on the smartphone. Smartphones also have a way better selection of apps than regular phones, and lots of the apps are free, especially if you go with some sort of Android.

Some of the non-smartphones only have a $10 data package that's also required, but only allows 25 MB of data every month so that package is basically only good for email delivery on the go and the occasional google search. Some of them have facebook and twitter apps that are decent, but if you use them too much, you'll go way over the 25 MB cap.

If you're going to actually use and enjoy email or facebook on your phone, ...

the $10 package is ok for light webbrowsing and email, but honestly, the browsers are so slow that you'll end up paying 10 a month for it and barely using it. You can surf quite a bit for the 25mb on those browsers, but you can't get close to surfing everywhere. And if you use the built in Youtube player, you'll burn through it really fast.

If ALL you care about is text email, then the 3gMM phones are a nice perk over feature phones because of the better cameras, and email on the go. But if you're thinking a smartphone might be kind of neat, get one now. unlimited data is the same for the 3gmm phones and smartphones.

With a smartphone you get:
-Free GPS (on android it is turn by turn, on others it is like a mobile mapquest)
-Free...

TuneIn Radio is another good radio app, you oughta check it out. It has tons, and tons of radio stations, both across the U.S., and the world!

I have a ? for you about what you said about smartphones having a decent mp3 and mobile video player.
I've downloaded some videos, both .mpeg, and .wmv and
-sometimes- the videos play, and sometimes they don't. Any ideas? Maybe an app recommendation?

I use Mixzing for music and Meridian for movie files. I've had good luck with both. The only things that mess up on my phone are iTunes+ (drm free) songs I have because Apple is full of a**holes and they still have to "authorize" devices to playback their DRM free music. (I had the same issue with my old Zen)
