I have been getting text messages of spam on my phone sice early february of 05. I have spoken to verizon tech support and they think they have found my text email or number on a website that I have never visited. Prior to the spam "mess" I would use the text feature maybe once or twice a month. Sometimes I don't get a spam text for two or three days then I get two or three text spams in one day! I'm at wits end. Verizon I should think about changing my phone number, I have already changed my email address on my phone and that was already a month ago. And it hasn't helped. They also said I could just turn my text service completely off.
I DO NOT want to change my phone number. If anybody there can give any suggestions I would be grateful...

Porting won't help, it's not verizon that's causing it. People who send those spam text have many means of getting your number. Verizon doesn't sell your info and is even shot down the idea of a directory for our customers privacy. Depending on how many different address you get these text from, you can block the address at www.Vtext.com It's worth it to spend a couple minutes to register and block the addresses. It can be very bothersome, some customers never get spam and other get it to the extent of changing their number because they don't want to take the time to block them from vtext.com. Hopefully this will help for an idea, tech support can't really do much about it at this point, vtext is the last resort.

Why does this happen though? How do they get our numbers, I didnt know there was spam txt msgs. Shouldn't that be ilegal? It is not like your e-mail, on your cell phone you actually have to pay when you get that crap...

I want to thank everyone who tried to help me in this situation.
I had gone to vtext about 4 months ago to block all this spam. It didn't work then. But now it's saturday morning(12:58 a.m.) and I just finished go to vtext again, and I put 12 different email addresses in the boxs.
I will give this 7 days from today, if the spam text isn't reduced by that time, I'll change cell carriers and change my phone number.
I really like verzion's service and their customer service. I have had several different carriers in the past, but I never had this text spam problem with the other carriers.
If verizon can't fix this problem, with so many quality carriers out there, it would make more sense to give another carrier a try.

I did not mean to imply Verizon charges $.10. I was using Cinular's charge. Which I believe is $.10 both ways. I don't text message so Im not sure of the charges. I would notice them on my bill though. I use text very rarely so its easy to see $.20 on a couple of Text messages I may send or recieve in a month.

The point I was trying to make was I have Never recieved a SPAM twxt message in 9 or so years with my phone number on ATTWS or in the past year Cingular.

Frog:

i know you've proven how much you hate the big V here, but as several people have noted, the text spam has NOTHING to do with the carrier.

It has nothing to do with Verizon that this guy is getting unwanted text messages (and I do feel sorry for him, that sucks).

Just as it has nothing to do with Cingular that you HAVEN'T been getting unwanted text messages.

It all has to do with who you've given your phone number to.

Well I can only speak to Cingular and my experience with them.

My home phone mumber is like the email account one uses only for commerce. I have given my cell number out as a second phone though on everthing that requested it and still have not recieved any junk text. The carriers may sell phone lists who knows. They can be a bit greedy. Verizon in particular. (BT issue)

KF - This is not a Carrier issue. Verizon is not the reason why this guy is getting SPAM and Cingular/ATTWS is not the reason why you haven't recieved any SPAM

As an ATTWS/Cingular Blue reps I get calls like this more than I like to. Because I can't do anything to stop them, nor can I find out who is actually sending the TM or how the cust got signed up. All I can do is issue 1 time courtesy credit and advise cust of the few ways for them to stop (Which have been mentioned here)

Carriers at this time have no control over this people who are sending SPAM. It sucks. But this guys problem is not Verizons fault. And if he switchs carriers most likely everything will start up again with his new # since he gives his cell # out to eve...

Cell customers aren't going to risk losing customers by selling their number and Verizon was the only major carrier against a 411 directory for cell numbers. Please see this article below about the network blocking issues Nextel is facing due to spam.

A spike in spam volume over the past several weeks is hindering the ability of Nextel Communications' customers to send and receive inter-carrier and intra-carrier text messages. The problem, which Nextel says started in mid-March, is resulting in several hours of delays in text message delivery.

A Nextel subscriber who contacted Wireless Week said that text messages are often delivered several hours late ...

Why dont you just have Verizon change your number, is free of charge and it wont extend your contract, if you like the secvice you should give it a shot.

I get spam on my demo line but I have never gotten a single one on my personal line, you should give changing your number a shot first, just call 1-800-922-0204, its a free call to cust care and Im sure somebody will be glad to help you. 😉
