OK can i really ask why Verizon bills you a month in advance for a plan you haven't even used yet? Because that sounds like a rip off to me.

It's standard industry practice.

But that's utter ridiculous for them to charge you in advanced for something you haven't even used yet. Plus that's illegal too!

if it WAS illegal, start a class action lawsuit. Or someone else would have already.

Why is it illegal? It's a business deal between you and them. THEY say 'pay us and you can use our stuff'. You either say "okay" or "no".

I just want to know why think it's illegal. You pay for food before you eat it at McD's. You pay for gas before you pump it. I know of a few computer shops that make you pay before they will fix your computer (Best Buy for example... Geek Squad - you pay before they do ANYTHING.)

There are places that charge you AFTER the fact - but they also risk giving a service and not getting paid.

I really want to know how this is illegal tho. Please post previous legal stuff. Past laws. Past cases. Supreme Court rulings.

Probably the same reason my gas company, water company and landline telco all do the same thing.

Other carriers do it. Verizon does it. It happens on contract OR prepaid.

Why?... .. . Why not?

When you sign up you pay the month ahead. When you disconnect, and it is the last day of the bill cycle, you will not owe vzw money for your last month, only extras like games or ringtones downloaded the last month.

This way vzw does not have to chase customers down for the last bill, and in some cases you might get a refund.

Don't be ridiculous. Are you upset that you pay your rent at the beginning of the month, when you haven't lived there yet? No because you are billed for your contract services for the upcoming month, same thing the wireless companies do.

Wow, you made a good point. I'm going to walk into the local store and walk out with a new TV. When they question me, I'll let them know that paying before I use it is a rip-off. And illegal.

I should sue YOU for starting this thread. Yes, they bill you for the month in advance and if you cancel in the midst of a bill cycle they will refund the remainder of days in the cycle which were not used. When I worked for Alltel they didn't bill in advance and the result was more than a few deadbeats would activate service and never pay a bill.

Not to add to this already friendly discussion, but if you look at your bill you might notice that when you get your bill the bill is for the month you are already a week or so into, and is due just before the end of your service cycle.

A true full month in advance would entail getting a bill for the bill cycle ahead of you, not the one you are already in the midst of.

On your bills it's almost like you've got one foot in the past and one in the present. The past pertains to your usage and any fees associated with it. The present pertains to the month's worth of minute allotment you're already using by the time you get your bill.

Note there's no future or "advance" statement in the previous paragraph. We call it being billed "a m...

Well if you really look at the bill, its not really a month in advance. When you first start service or make a change on demand or back date a change you pay for what you used and for the service you are using today. Just like most companies they are not going to provide you service if you have not paid for it yet that a chance that most places will never take.
