Unlimited data usage to go bye-bye?

So I read an article in the LA Times the other day that stated the large carriers are burdened by the 4000% (I think) increase in data use from mobile devices over the last year or two. The article actually said one of the carriers may consider MB caps or pricing tiers to curb heavy usage. This is like your cable company setting a limit on how much airtime you are allowed or your internet provider limiting how much time you may spend online. I think these are good analogies.

So my question is; could Verizon make a change to customers mid-contract or is their only opportunity to change the price structure when a customer re-ups or signs a contract? I am a fairly new BlackBerry user and I racked up 200mb on my last bill which would have set...

Typically When Verizon Wireless changes data plan rates they grandfather them so there isn't an adverse Material change for the customer right away. As long as the device is compatible with the data plan you get to keep it. Verizon Wireless' plan is to focus more on data products since there is a bigger profit margin involved. You will start to see more phones/PDAS/Blackberrys that will require the data plan going forward to promote more usage rather than curtail it. If caps are implemented it will most likely be aimed at the 5GB limited.
1.99/MB usage pay as you go is for non-PDA/smartphone devices. these don't use the 3G network for data unless its for tethering (which requires a separate plan) or accessing Vcast products. A long time ag...

No. You're good. A material change would give you grounds to terminate with no ETF. They don't want that. If they institute such a policy it would be on new contracts.

It would be for new contracts only. (kinda like the unlimited/5gb cap change)

200mb would be nowhere near the cap you have to worry about. What they are talking about are phones like the Droid where you can rack up 1.2Gb without even trying, and the OS makes it possible to Tether and much harder to catch.

They won't switch to Pay per use pricing, they will have pricing tiers. So like 100mb for x, 1gb for y, 5gb for z, etc (just making tiers up) I don't think you'll really see this until LTE. Current plans might get a hardcap of a couple GB, but no major changes until LTE and you start getting Data only plans.

If there are any plans to remove the "unlimited" verbiage from the handsets, you'll see it happen the same way they pushed mandatory data plans on all smartphones a while back.

You'll probably see a declaration like, "All models released after MM/DD/YYYY will be incompatible with the unlimited data package" and that will basically drive all the unlimited plans into extinction, because anyone using more then 1 GB per month on a 3 inch screen is totally unwilling to use the same handset for three years straight. A change like this would be the most reasonable way to shake things up.

If such a change were coupled with a 500 MB option for $19.99, this would actually end up as a huge win for the carrier and the consumer.

I have a question, I do not use the web very much, some days not at all and when I do it is not for tethering, its mostly to check the weather and sometimes face book. So my question is, how many mb or gb am I using, I dont now if 5gb is a lot or average, cause I dont really know what I use.

You should be able to get your total data usage from your VZW invoice. It appears on my bill each month, but it's expresed in kilobytes. From what I can tell 5 GB is a huge amount of data. I send & receive maybe 20-30 e-mails per day on my BB and check weather, facebook, twitter similar to what you said, but several times per day basis, also do not teather and I used 200mb last billing period. That's only 1/25 of 5GB (I think).

True enough. I believe I stated that 200mb is 1/25th of 5gb, not 1gb. Feel free to double check this.

AT&T and Verizon plans and price points have a mysterious way of matching (With minor differences... mainly roll over and dumb-phone data plans ATM).

I could see AT&T going with tier'd data and Verizon putting forth an almost equal option (or... at ths point, AT&T matching whatever Verizon does since it seems AT&T will be the last to arrive to the party).

I would also assume a bad response if Sprint keeps up with unlimited data on 4G and Verizon/AT&T doesn't... .. .

At&t is supposedly only doing this for Iphone user's as they are the ones bogging the network. I don't recall him saying anything else in regards to standard BB or PDa phones.

As far as sprint… lol. Verizon is already rolling through LTE just concluding testing in Boston with Burst speed's of 50mbps. They plan to be almost completely covering the current "3g" network by the years end, and by the end of 2011 broader than the current 3g. At&tg is also switching over to LTE but not until like 2012. Sprint's coverage is just way to inconsistent for this to really be a major blow to Verizon or At&t.

iPhones are the only ones *CURRENTLY* causing the issue... but with Droid, 7 and possibly Palm arriving to the party soon, it'll have to include more than just the iPhone. To think that the others won't draw data is naive.

Whether or not the others draw as much data usage as the iPhone is yet to be seen (As only the backflip is really live yet on AT&T).

Sprint and T-Mobile may be #3/#4, but they do have influence. You think AT&T/Verizon would have their knockoff Fav5 lists otherwise?

Granted... how big of an influence is debatable, as people still seem to flock to the bigger network/bills *Shrug* It all depends on how good the WiMax roll out turns into vs LTE.

Verizon is supposed to have LTE everywhere by the end of the year. S...

My Circle preceded My Favs and was a better option. The reason Verizon adopted My Circle and changed the name to Friends and Family is because so many Alltel customers were threatening to jump off cliffs if they couldn't keep their My Circle plans and then the damned legacy VZW customers were threatening to cancel, sue or throw a good old fashioned tantrum if they couldn't get in on the act, too. Verizon was slick about it though. They locked it into adoption of My Verizon (they really want customer service to be self serve as much as possible) as a condition. Why does AT&T have A list now? Because Verizon did F&F. If the Alltel buyout Had not occurred, neither of the Big Two would have adopted it.

I don't foresee droid, 7 and especially Palm effecting the network the way Iphone has affected at&t. Windows and Palm are just out of the game and it will take years for them to market back in unless they come out with a major break through to get them a lot of buzz.

The friends and family, favorite 5/10 is a different scenario. These are things that customer's demand. Capped data is only going to piss a lot of people off, just like this whole 9.99 **** on the mm phones. I think its something that Verizon will try and steer clear of...At least until these phones get to the point where people are downloading mass amounts of music and/or movies.

I do feel that they will have LTE rolled out on time. It has been in the works for a long ti...

Firstly, LTE, WiMax, et al do nothing to fix what the real problem is, the back haul to each tower site needs to be fast enough and broadbanded enough to handle all the data at those speeds. So, more important than LTE radio waves is updating and increasing the backhaul to each tower, something that takes A LOT of time and money.

There is a reason EVERY carrier caps speeds based on which tower you are on, time of day, etc.

Anyways, that is major aspect #1. Secondly, if whoever said it really wants to believe Verizon will have essentailly their ENTIRE coverage zone replaced with LTE by years end, you are NUTS. Verizon already announced and upadated and announced and update again and again. What did they say? They would have LTE in ...

What seems funny to me is they are pushing everyone to get data (mandatory plans), then might not be able the traffic so they then pull unlimited away from people. Maybe if they would have left things alone that would have bought them some time to shore up any possible weak spots in their data network. That and you wouldn't have so many pi$$ed off customers who don't use data having it forced upon them. But I suppose that was a two birds with one stone solution. Nullify the complaints about phantom MB charges and make an extra $10 a line from everyone except simple phone users. Anyways, if I wanna really use a lot of data, I'll sit at my PC or break out my laptop, more room to hold the data on there.
