Why are all of the newest Verizon Wireless ads re-branding as "Verizon" instead of "Verizon Wireless"? I thought Verizon was the landline and Verizon Wireless was the cellphone side.... no?

I haven't noticed. What kind of ads? Internet, radio, TV, signage?

TV ads so far. No longer say "Verizon Wireless". They end with: "Verizon". I'm wondering why?

Does this mean landline is somehow joining with wireless?

Verizon has been trying to improve its own image at the expense of Verizon Wireless for years. If you take a look at either company's website you will see they are hooked together, there is a tab type system at the top to let you jump from landline to business to wireless.

The only reason Verizon Wireless has not been fully absorbed into Verizon is because of Vodafone. For example if you look at Verizon's quarterly earing reports they even report for their "wireless" end, giving the info for Verizon Wireless.

Doing this creates un-realistic expectations of our customers and causes confusion and anger in the people that think the two companies are a single company. Many times I have had a caller yelling at me because I dont have any inf...

Maybe just for simplicity, or just straying from tradition. It used to be that every landline that had a wireless division indicated their wireless division with an addendum to their name. BellSouth Mobility, Cingular Wireless, AT&T Wireless, Sprint PCS, Bell Atlantic Mobile, GTE Wireless, Verizon Wireless: they've all been the name of their wireless division at one point or another. Most companies dropped "wireless" from their wireless names some time ago. Verizon, being one of the last 55/45% partnerships left, just held onto it a lot longer than AT&T and Sprint, who no longer add "wireless" to their wireless division's moniker.

A Brand's name is huge. It carries enormous weight to the owner's of that brand. This isn't being done for simplicity... it's deliberate. The question is... why? Verizon is the Landline company. Here, the word "wireless" is important as it identifies a specific brand: "Verizon Wireless", as opposed to "Verizon" (the landline carrier). Is Verizon Wireless being somehow absorbed into Verizon Landline?

I know around here Verizon (landline) has a pretty trashy reputation while VerizonWireless has a decent one.

Maybe someday.

So why did Sprint drop PCS from it's name? Why did SBC chose not to continue the name "AT&T Wireless?" Perhaps they found the wireless wasn't as important, especially given that the wireless business rules the roost?

Maybe Verizon Wireless omitting "wireless" at the end of their commercials is actually a way to boost the brand image of Verizon itself?

So many questions.

True -but those companies are wholly owned subsidiaries.
Verizon does not own all of Verizon Wireless.

EXACTLY. Well, mostly.

Sprint is a partnership / arm-twisting agreement.

Still, the others all found that single branding made more sense. Maybe Verizon is simply catching up.

Of course, we could always go with the REAL NAME of Verizon Wireless, which is CellCo Partnership. I'm sure that would look pretty with a big check mark over it.
