If VZW goes to the iPhone, won't it bog down our great network the way that is has with AT&T's network?

I hope not. If there's anything I don't need is to have trouble using my phone as a phone. This has me concerned. Verizon doesn't have a lot of spectrum in the Chicago market. I can tell you that not all towers have EVDO in the 850 band. I know my immediate area, all the towers have EVDO in the PCS band. Verizon only has 10mhz in the PCS band, along with 25mhz in the 850 band for 35mhz total (when counting 850 & 1900 bands only).

If the iPhone does prove to be a data hog on Verizon's CDMA network, I just hope when the LTE version of the iPhone won't take down the LTE network as ...

it should not be a problem vzw spends aprox. 6 billion dollars a year back into there network so if vzw does get the i-phone and there is a problem they will be quick to fix this problem

remember that Verizon handles voice and data traffic separately, so heavy data usage won't crash Voice the way it does on ATT/Tmobile

Hmm...I never thought that could be a marketing tool!

It's nice to know my high $ plan is going to good use. AT&T can kiss my "big red" booty!

att would charge you the same amount, for less 3g 😁

CDMA treats data and voice differently, one of the side effects being that you can't talk and surf at the same time (without wifi... speaking of.. it's amazing to me how surfing over wifi suddenly isn't a viable option now that verizon phones have it.. remember a year or so ago, where surfing over 3g was too slow? now people are saying surfing and talking over 3g is the only way to go!)

the other side is that Heavy data traffic doesn't hit voice traffic directly. Now if a tower gets overloaded, that is an issue, but a CDMA cellsite can typically handle more than a gsm one because of how the technology works, so again, less of an issue.

I'm not saying that heavy data isn't a ...

Verizon should have insisted on Wi-Fi in handsets years ago instead of poo-pooing the need for it. Sure it is unnecessary but the competition rolled it for all it was worth.

Oh I agree. But I think it's funny that now that we have wifi they go "well you can't talk and surf at the same time without it!"

It's kinda one of those... you never say x. You: x ...oh, you never say y!

It is absolutely necessary to have WiFi for some of us. I use it when on vacation on a ship to get email on my XV6800.

Owning one's own business has its drawbacks...such as checking email a few times a day on vacation.

For the most part, when someone here says Wifi is useless, they're referring to the other 51 weeks of the year when they're not on vacation. Your reason is the very example of the usefulness of Wifi on a phone, however, no one is on vacation 52 weeks out of the year (though I wish I could be the one to try).

What Menno meant was that Verizon processes the signals separately. If you're on your air card, you're connected to a tower that isn't processing voice calls. A sudden increase in voice calls isn't going to force you off the tower, because you're not on the same connection.

GSM signals can double up it's channel so you can talk and receive web data at the same time, which is awfully convenient for those few who need it, and awfully inconvenient when someone can't place a call because a handful of people are talking and surfing at the same time and the tower's capacity is full.

Well then I guers in that case a cell tower would need more T1 lines to handle the traffic.

Most towers (at least, the ones in my area) are quietly being upgraded to high capacity fiber optic for that reason, AND to create infrastructure that doesn't require the local landlines.

I guess I misunderstood your post (three posts back?). Verizon has been upgrading it's cell sites across the west, Vegas included.

I could care less about AT&T upgrading their infrastructure. They're already behind in that game.

Most customers (especially customers buying an entertainment phone) don't go overseas.

Blackberry is global on the tour/storm, but until they come out with a webkit browser and make their platform more app friendly, the'll continue being known as the business phone (which isn't a bad thing to be known as)

Jan 7, 2010, 9:03 AM
yeah, the world phone thing is kinda funny. I would love to see some stats on tour and storm users that have EVER signed up for verizon's global service. Im sure the percentage is ridiculously low.

Bottom line? If I traveled overseas a lot I would buy an unlocked BB Bold or unlocked nokia. I would never pay verizon's world rates anyway. The lack of gsm is non issue for 98% of customers.
