"Nextel itself has purchased exclusive rights to a CDMA 1X VoIP solution from Qualcomm, known as Qchat, even though the company has yet to announce any intentions to migrate to a CDMA-based 3G technology. Nextel reports that it is working hard to get Qchat to reach call set-up delays of less than three seconds, according to a recent research report from Merrill Lynch. Nextel officials insist that three seconds is the minimum latency acceptable."

(fyi, nextel said at the conference call as well as i reported from the CTIA it was 1.5 seconds)

i am responding to your posts. i would rather copy and paste then say something stupid LIKE YOU DO!

it is developed by nextel and qualcomm so hence it is owned by nextel. what was a better word was to say "exclusive use".

I'll say it again...Nextel does not own Qchat. Qualcomm licenses it for use to Nextel.

they own the rights to qchat, and they developed it hence they own qchat for the time being until those rights of ownership expire. so hence, they own it. if no one else can use it, doesnt that mean they own it?

Qualcomm developed it.

Nextel signed a deal a few years back with Qualcomm for exclusive rights to deploy QChat in the U.S. It's fair to assume they did it just to keep Sprint and Verizon from using it, as much as keeping their own options open. Outside the U.S., other carriers are free to license QChat and use it on their 1xRTT release A networks.

That clears that up. Understand now, Nextel? Nextel does not own Qchat.

Qualcomm licenses the rights to Nextel to use Qchat. If Nextel owned Qchat, Qualcomm wouldn't be licensing the rights to Nextel. Are you getting this?

Does this mean that I own my wife?? I know when I got married that it was an exclusive binding contract between her and I and that there shall be no adultrous activity kinda like this whole Q-Chat thing. By the way, why does everyone have their panties in a bunch over a technology that isn't even being used by the public or could never be used at all??

yea, you own your wife. hahahha.

why not? technology is very interesting especially if it will come out in 2007-2008 time frame. it was used at the CTIA, which i belived that i gave my synopsis in here. it will be used.

Mar 27, 2005, 3:48 PM
yea, but why do you need EV_DV when you can use voip and things like that? ev-dv speeds are really the speeds of REV A for DO. hey as long as qualcomm continues to see royalties and revenue, i dont care, becuase i own stock. hahaha. i dont think people would be spending for REV O, REV A, and then DV. waste of money.

thanks for the clarification. many articles said that qualcom and nextel developed it together, but i didnt think so.

i was told that nextel had qchat rights internationally too.

i agree with : "It's fair to assume they did it just to keep Sprint and Verizon from using it, as much as keeping their own options open."

So wait a minute. Rich says the very same thing I said and all of a sudden it's "thanks for the clarification"? Nextel may have had a hand in developing Qchat to fit their specifications...but that's not the same as owning the patents to the technology.

the international part:

(plus i was told by a few people i cant disclose on here)

"These agreements, which grant Nextel certain exclusive license rights in North America and several other international markets, are expected to enable Direct Connect Push to Chat functionality over wireless CDMA networks using a voice-over-IP architecture. The architecture will be designed to enable subscribers worldwide to talk with each other at the push of a button. In addition, the technology will be designed to support dynamic management of group membership by subscribers to enable users to add and remove participants at any time on their handsets. 😕
Well it seems that I might be missing something. From what I understand, QChat will only work w/handsets that are BREW based, and both Sprint and Nextel are JAVA based.

So my question is will they be planning to switch their OS, or has/will Qualcomm make changes to their code? According to Qualcomm, it is only availble to BREW based phones.
...

I am not sure about that. Maybe Rich Brome would know, or you can just ask Qualcomm, Nextel and Motorola yourself about that whole situation.

Mar 25, 2005, 6:17 PM
Well if someone can answer the question then that can determine Nextel's initial intention for purchasing a product that is not compatible w/their phones.

According to Qualcomm's website, QChat is only available to BREW based handsets. Therefore Nextel's license does not help their PTT service w/Sprint. Though the merger report did state a service improvement of PTT, but did not named the product that they would be using.

If these 2 companies do make changes to their OS then I can see 2 options.
1.) change OS from JAVA to BREW
- this would not be likely cuz it would suggest crippling phones w/bluetooth
- this is because of licensing fees to BREW products
- increasing price of phones and/or plans to compensate ...

he was questioning that, so i wanted to put it on here. you are right that putting that on here wasnt neccessary, so that is my fault. it does deal with verizon though, becuase qchat will be verizon's competitor with their push to talk system.

so it does have something to do with verizon.

Yeah, that's terribly stupid. Just like:

1) Verizon doesn't use the 1900mhz band.

2) Nextel owns Qchat.

3) Cingular will not regain profitability for another 77 years.

And those are quotes, people.

Okay. Rich already told you that they don't. I've had enough of you to last me a lifetime. It's time I just stuck to what the site's about and occasionally try to be funny.
