International TXT messaging?

I'm very interested in exchanging TXT/SMS messaging with family in Italy. I've attempted to send a couple. I get billed, but they never go through. Does Verizon only have an agreement with Vodafone over there (which, of course, nobody actually uses)?

I went so far as to try Cingular GSM, but their coverage where I work sucks.

Thanks!

as far as I know, cingular is the only one I know of that can send International texts. I tried it with alltel, sprint and nextel and neither worked. Called sprints tech support and the guy there told me he uses his cingular phone to send texts to his friends in Germany.

T-Mobile also has many INTL sms agreements amongst others. To send is $0.15/ea and receiving depends on which sms plan you have, because it will come from the alloted amount. Or if no sms plan/feature it's just like domestic $0.05/ea.

*However, there are still carriers without said agreements, in which case T-Mobile can't guarantee the delivery of the message to the recepient.*

I personally don't do it myself on any regular basis, but I've sent INTL sms to a few countries and all were delivered fine.

Verizon has an "open test messaging service" which means you can text anyone from a verizon phone (international or USA) if another company has a closed system that will not accept Verizon's messages, they will not go through. If you have a question about it you need to contact the company of the person your trying to send a text to, to see if they can receive them before being charged for using the system to send it. US Cellular allows international text at the same cost as domestic text. I text Greece fairly frequently and never havea problem.

This is not true! I send txts from my VZW phone to family in Venezuela (main carriers are CDMA there) and they go through all the time. Now since most people have CDMA phones there I can't use my cingular phone for internacional txt, I only have a friend there that has a GSM phone there, I send him txt, he gets them but when he replies I dont get them

VZW does allow txt msg intnly to Italy:

This link also provides specific dialing instrcutions.

If you are sending/receiving txt msgs domestically with no problems and the msg you are sending to Italy is sent succesful then the problem is on the other users end.

Please keep in mind that it takes two to tango don't automatically assume that the vodaphone user has no issues.

Yes, but with Vodafone Italy. That is truly the smallest carrier over there, and unfortunately NOBODY uses it. ☹️ The big ones are TIM and WIND.

If it says Vodafone only then it's vodafone only.

Another thing that may possibly play a role (as to why your sms are not getting through)?? I was just thinking of is the compatibility of the messaging services. VZW, Cingular, T-Mobile etc...they use a 2-way sms service. It's possible the other carrier may use an internet based text service such as short mail.
