Well, it finally went down. It was chilly dark, friday afternoon. ATT had free blackberry bolds, and I had an itchy trigger finger. Thats right, I signed a 2 year deal with ATT...GASP!
I had to do it, the deal was too good, and as many of you know I get pretty much get zero coverage at home. And while the network extender helped, its just not the same as actually having access to verizon's fantastic network.
ATT is strong in my city and 3G is everywhere, I actually got a bold for my dad recently and his phone was getting 5 bars of 3G service at my home.
This is just a trial run, I haven't ported my number to ATT just yet, I just felt I owed it to myself to give them a shot. If I do port out, I will definitely be coming back t...

How did you manage to ge it free? How do you like it so far? Welcome to the blue size!

They had a one day special for refurbished bolds on a 2 yr contract. Started friday, and they ran out on saturday I believe.

Wow! This is like admitting you had a one night stand with an ugly chick. You sound so bummed.
...
LMAO, thats actually a pretty good analogy

Ya but that's a bunch of crap. Who really needs cell service in their home? Who spends enough time there to care? A lot of us in this forum are mobile professionals that need the phone away from home more than we need it at home.
...
...except for the people who get rid of their landline and go totally cell??
...
Landline? ewww!
Go 100% cell, regardless of coverage. đ
...
I work from home, lol.
and I talk on the phone all the time, thats why I have a landline.
...
...but I don't have a landline. I haven't had one since 2001. So yeah...I need my cell phone to work at my house. Luckily, Verizon does work at my house.
...
...Chris first announced this decision on twitter and I TRIED to stop him but I was all alone in my effort. If you guys were on twitter you could have jumped on this issue earlier on. đ
...
gunnyMar 30, 2009, 5:46 PM
you are fired!..but seeing how Chris could bench press 3 of you i guess you never stood a chance.
...
I weigh 210..benching 3 of me is just scary. đ
...
I dunno about 3 of you. But I could prolly bench press one of you 30 times. lol

Daaaaaaaaaaaaamnnnnnn đŗ

Put up 225lbs 23 times at our combine in Jan of 2009.
...
I kinda like the faux leather....you didnt like it?
...
I don't use a silicone skin all the time and well, the leather ain't me.
Plus I think the smooth battery cover cuts down on size, a little.
I could be just imagining it though. đ
...
Oh Chris,
Do I see a sickle on that red jacket of yours?
...
No offense, but if you had been having that many issues at your home with network coverage you should have switched a long time ago (ie not too long after you had issues). Don't get me wrong, I love using VZW too, but when it comes down to it, you just have to use the service that'll work where you need it the most, even if it isn't Verizon.
...
Well here's the deal, I kinda pushed through because I used to travel more for my job and verizon gets waaaaaay better coverage in smaller towns in Wisconsin.
At my current job, I only have one account and its in my main city, so my travel is less than 25 miles per day. Since I'm no longer really worried about coverage, the switch to ATT became a little easier for me.
Yeah, this is prolly long overdue, I guess I just needed a great deal to give me a little push đ
Chris
...
Well, from reading your reply it seemed that VZW worked for the majority of where you needed it when you needed it. It makes sense now for you to switch since those needs have changed.
...
That will be up to him he is already experiencing one of those famous ATT 3G outages! đ
...
lol...real talk right there son.
...
how are you liking the call quality so far man? i can't tell you how many times I've read on here that you didn't know how your parents could stand using att. has att improved in your area over that last few years? do you care that you're not with as reliable as carrier as verizon?
...
I haven't gotten the phone yet, but I will run it through a ton of test. And yes my parents and sister are still on ATT, and I gotta be honest when my dad was talking to me from his Blackberry Bold it was very clear. I guess the only thing I can do is test out the service. If it works, great, if not...well, looks like I will be holding out for the 9630 in July đ
Chris
...
Right on ATT use to be really poor in my area....one of my friends uses att and when I talk to him it seems fine nowadays....but a few years back I would not even call the guy because the conversation would be that awful.
Guess you will fine out soon enough.
...
Im playing with it now. Only things thats weird is that its not connecting to 3G very well. My dads connected with ease at my house and stayed connected. kinda weird. Other than that, its a pretty sweet phone, and the messaging has been blazing fast so far
...
Nice man now just sit back and enjoy playing with your new toy. I bet it works out for you.
...
yeah Im gonna have to put this thing through the ringer....but that 9630 may be able to keep me around đ
...
yeah it takes a lot to get people away from a carrier that you are use to, and have grown to trust.
...
yeah, I think the biggest thing is the customer care. I really love their customer service and they have always been good to me
...
yeah they are very good at keeping you happy.
...
I think you'll find AT&T's customer care to be really fair. I've been selling Cingular/AT&T since 2005, and they have come miles since then.
Also, search howardforums for "debranding" the bold. It enables manual network select and the ability to go 3G or EDGE only. It can really help out depending on what kind of area you're in.
...
yeah I read a little about debranding. That does void the warranty tho correct?
...
It does, but you can change it back if need be for warranty purposes.
I didn't say that of course.
The bottom line is this: if the iPhone can go 2G only, why can't the Bold? It's stupid that we have to take matters into our own hands, and I understand the need for ths feature. Especially since EDGE uses much less battery life, and until we start getting phones with better battery technologies this option should be included.

I just ignored all sense and picked up a Storm. I need to understand it in and out for work, so it has a practical purpose, but I'm sure my Curve is hating me already.
...
I just sold my storm (got it for $140, sold it for $300 đ. It was a fun experiment, and a cool phone, but it just took me too long to do basic functions
...
Cool. Now we get to find out if this "ugly chick" has some skillz. I think she is going to turn you out.
...
I ordered mine and I get mine tomorrow in the mail. Tell me how you like it because I know I will keep vzw for my family since they are all on it but I have no signal at my house so I thought I would try out the bold as well.
...
Cool, I will definitely keep everyone posted on the trial. Let me know what you think as well!
...
I know that I just got the Blackberry bold today. But I notice that the Internet is super slow even when it says 3G. I guess that I am spoiled by vzw.
...
Its pretty fast when you are getting a strong 3G signal...but on edge its can be pretty slow.
...
Maybe that is it. I get to travel around more tomorrow so we shall see đ
...
Cool, keep us posted!
...
So you left Verizon for ATT because you didn't have service???? That is pretty dumb and i really don't understand that.... You must be live in bizzaro world. Dumb just plain dumb!
...
MennoMar 31, 2009, 2:17 PM
So.. do you still have that curve? I am thinking of switching to a blackberry, but I don't have the cash right now for a new one (as much as I want to hold out for the Niagara)
...
Oh Chris!!!! I don't know what to say! lol
...
I tried att it really sucks.
...
yeah im not a huge fan thus far....voice is quality is pretty suspect. Coverage has been okay tho.
...
epikApr 1, 2009, 9:34 AM
That almost sounds like saying dial-up Internet coverage is just as good as broadband Internet coverage. đ

Voice quality is going to get a lot more "suspect" believe me... đ Have you gotten the unexplained static garble? Or the random dropped call for no reason even in a full coverage area?
...
epikApr 1, 2009, 9:43 AM
Don't they refer to that as "normal coverage?"

Well, no carrier guarantees any coverage. I know Verizon points it out when the conversation comes up. I'm sure AT&T does too, but they might have to use it a little more often than others.
...
He already knew it would not be as good, chances are he will test it further and send it back.
...
@maverick
No dropped calls yets, but the static garble has definitely been present. This trial may be over sooner than later...

That's too bad. âšī¸
Mines been rock solid. đ
It's got to be the coverage perhaps, rather than the Bold?
...
yeah its prolly the coverage, not the phone. Although the more I read about the bold, I keep hearing about a ton of problems with the device.

lol... yeah I know how it goes with AT&T as I once decided to give the deathstar a try... I would have full coverage in a 3G coverage area and it would still be nothing but static garble... Cant understand it but it most certainly happens...We will be ready for when you say its going back.. đ
...
ummmm, that might be happening sooner than later. I'll keep you guys posted.

A friend left AT&T and his Bold for Verizon and the Storm (this was before I decided to take the plunge into the Storm myself), and just yesterday returned the Storm and went to the Curve.
He used to be an HTC guy, and wanted the touch screen. I warned him. He was too accustomed to that trackball generation. But the sound and signal quality, he mentioned, was a huge improvement over his Bold.
...
att raising the bar but keeping the static đ¤Ŗ

Well that's why we buy refurbs, all the problems are supposed to be fixed. đ
Too bad the lack of quality coverage can deep six a great Blackberry.
I'm lucky enough to live in an area that all the major carriers have excellent coverage. đ
...
The voice quality of both earpiece & speaker have been great on my refurb Bold. đ
The keyboard is a little stiff, probably replaced.
And I have had it unexpectedly switch to EDGE twice. đ
But I'm using that new 'Bolt' browser witch seems pretty snappy.
I was unhappy I couldn't get my contact off my LG Dare to the Bold via bluetooth.
But I've read that none of the BB's support that kind of transfer, so not a knock against the Bold.

This post has taken to Godzilla proportions.

...
Canty will never leave verizon end of story.
...
Well, I made it a little longer but in the end came back to VZW.
Those damm 'I'm with the Verizon network.' commercials got me. đ¤
And the new BB Storm software coming out.
https://www.phonescoop.com/carriers/forum.php?fm=m&f ... »But also my refurb BB Bold had a sticky 'M' key, I always had to push it extra hard. I noticed 3G performance seemed to be tied to battery power, when it'd get low it would revert to EDGE more often.
And I also experienced the switching to SOS calls only for no apparent reason.
And well in this economy VZW gives me a bigger discount than ATT did. âšī¸
...
Not surprised I really think ATT will always suck.
