phone warranty question

I was wondering if I buy a phone off of craigslist, it is supposed to be new, is there still a 1 year warranty with the phone? Will a verizon store still fix the phone? Or are you basically hosed if something happens to the phone.

You are hosed because you bought it from craigslist. If you purchased it from a store, it would have a warranty. It will show as customer activated equipment which voids the warranty. Depending on what is wrong with the phone, sometimes reps to replace them under warranty.

Generally if you buy the phone online it will not be covered by the 1 year warranty since it was not sold by someone authorized to make sure the phone is in working order before it was sold.

Depending on where the phone was purchased from originally (like a corp store) they may honor the warranty.

In order for verizon to honor the warranty on the phones, they have to have sold the phones. So phones straight from the mfc. will not always be covered by warranty (some walmart phones have this issue).

The warranty policy recently changed. As always, the phone has to have been originally bought from Verizon Wireless, Brightstar, or BrightPoint. After that it also has to be on the account of the original purchaser. If the phone moves to a different account within the year they will charge $50 to do a warranty replacement.

It will not be done in a corporate store.

Showing up as customer provided equipment means nothing though. Every time we do an ESN change in an agent store it shows up as that. A customer can buy a phone full retail from us and it shows customer provided equipment but they still get the warranty.

But it is shown as being on that account first, and they can see where the phone was activated from (your store).

If it spends three months on account A and then suddenly shows up on Account B, that "customer provided equipment" will require a 50 dollar deductable should account B make a claim.

I just think this new $50 deductible thing for warranty is crazy. It makes it hard on our customers. The phone is within a year and has a manufacturer issue... it should be covered. Just because customer B now has it doesn't mean they've done something to damage it. Why should they have to pay for something that customer A wouldn't have had to pay for? People swap phones all the time.

I dont know, but I do know that when verizon does the warrenty exchange they then have to ship them back to LG, or MOTO, or something. These companies could have changed their policies as well.

I HATE this rule! Every phone should have an in-service date. Sort of like a car. no matter who has the phone it should be covered for one from the date it was first activated. Ive had to fight with them on phones I bought that were in perfect condition, and had a real issue, but they had to fight me on it due to this absurd policy.

If I buy a phone today, sell it tomorrow, the warranty is void? That makes no sense and its a cheap way for verizon to get out of their 1 year warranty.

Most warranties actually work this way. If you check the writing on almost any warranty (even lifetime ones) it covers the original owner only, and if the product is sold, donated, etc, the warranty is voided.

I agree that I wish the warranty would cover the device not the owner, but it is the industry standard... I guess they do it that way because they can't verify in what condition the phone was sold or something.

I guess, but as long as the phone doesnt have visible damage or water damage...I think they need to cover it, or offer up a standard policy on phones that were not purchased form verizon. Right now, the policy seems a little cloudy and vague.

I just want clarity and fairness for this policy.
