Blackberry 7100 series with Verizon?

I currently am a Verizon customer and travel about half of the month throughout the entire US. Verizon consistently has the best coverage in most areas. Now, here is my dilemma.

I want a Blackberry. Not the old (clunky) BlackBerry but the new 7100 series BlackBerry. I would have the best of both worlds, being able to use this device as a phone and also being able to retrieve my email (pushed). I know that the 7100 series currently offered is GSM and will not work on the Verizon network. For that reason, I am tempted to switch to Cingular and buy a 7100G. What I really want to know is there a 7100 series or another Blackberry on the horizon that I should wait for. I really don’t want to switch carriers and am willing to wait a few...

When I last spoke with Verizon's NorthEast Blackberry rep they were telling us we should be getting a 7100 version sometime before the end of the year, however it looks that will not happen, give RIM's pending lawsuits. If RIM loses this lawsuit regarding there software for the Blackberry's there is a very good chance that all the Blackberrys will be disconnected except for government accounts... and I mean ALL the blackberrys, Cingular, Verizon, TMobile, Sprint/Nextel... everything. Of course the case isn't over so it's all just speculation but it wouldn't suprise me if Verizon is going to hold off on any new Blackberry products in the meantime. We have seen a pic push on WirelessSync for the pda devices. Also WirelessSync's delay in email ...

Even though the Government is exempt for being cut off, even if a judge orders a shutdown of blackberry, I think that there is some other things that will prevent it.

1. News organizations use blackberry heavily. Imagine the pressure brought on RIM and NTP if they are cut off?!?!?

2. Other non government groups like the Red Cross, Salvation Army, etc. use BBerry. What a public relations nightmare if they are cut off!

3. Nextel just rolled out a 71xx series unit a week or two ago. IMO, these carriers will continue to sell these devices as long as they can to bolster the bottom line, even if there is a chance that they could be cut off, especially since the phone part would still be working.

4. Large businesses are dependent on bbe...

VZW does have a 7100 series on the horizon, supposed to be out this calender year. I would not worry too much about the lawsuit if I were you.

Yeah, though I have no inside info or credible sources, I just can't imagine a scenario where current blackberry's would be shut down.

This said, I am really struggling with the ringer volume/vibrate effectiveness. I missed two calls today because I could not hear/feel the phone ring.

Do you have a 7250? I have one and on mine the ringer and vibrate are great. I normally think that the vibrate on most devises is weak, but I have loved my blackberry on vibrate. I dont know just my opinion.

Yes I have a 7250. As for the ringer and vibrate and my experiences, in defense of the 7250, I think part of the problem is that as I get older my hearing is not what it use to be and with carrying a few extra pounds ;-) I don't feel the vibrate.

This said, I remain puzzled as to why my son's 7100t is so much louder and the vibrate is better.

I went to a Verizon Kiosk at Circuit City today. Tried their 7250, same ringer/vibrate problem. I then tried a Treo 650 and heard a much louder ringer than the 7250.

I was also troubled that when I contacted RIM, they blew me off as I was not a "TSupport Subscriber."

I may switch to the Treo even without the "push" email and I will have to go through a lot of expense to replace all of my acc...

Hey pwfg & Ceiling_it...I have been considering a Blackberry for awhile. My question is, does a Blackberry have some "PDA-like" or "Palm/Treo-like" capabilities on it? Not been using or exposed to either one of the above in the past, was just wondering. The phone would be for more personal use than business...though I would utilize the e-mail function some to check my e-mail from home, etc. What I would need this devise to do is hold address's, appt's, etc., and I know that speaks more of a PDA-phone, such as a Palm-phone or Treo...but they are so much more expensive than a Blackberry is.
Also, I know many phone's have "mini" organizers in them...my little Samsung N330 allows me to place appointment reminders in it, but most regular pho...

I used a Palm Pilot for many, many years and LOVED it! Then came the handheld cell phone and blackberry and I dumped the PP as I felt like I need a purse ;-)

Recently I dumped the cell phone and separate bberry and got the Verizon 7250.

As far as organizers go, comapred to the PP, it does not hold a candle to it. That said, it works well for my particular needs and configuration.

I use a MAC, which, is a real hurdle when you use a bberry. I bought a software program called PocketMac. This allows me to sync my address book, calendar and notes to my bberry. I know that there is a similar program for Windows users, but I have not used it myself. Most of my scheduling and other entries are done on my MAC and I am just updating my bberr...

You are welcome Chris!

Yeah, I have tried just taking the bberry on overnight trips and downloaded some critical files to a USB storage device but I would be fearful about a longer trip without the laptop. It just seems like there is one file that I need and don't have, or, a web site (sites) that I need to check out and can't on the bberry.

I am happy with the blackberry EXCEPT for the ringer and ear piece volume. What throws me about this is that my son's 7100t (just uses it for mail) ringer is really loud when I played with its ringers.

As far as Cingular. they may be okay, but I am very happy with Verizon and all my friends are on Verizon so "in calling" is great for me.
