Hat's off, VZW

As many of you know, VZW is being sued for blocking certain bluetooth functions of one of it's phones. Well, I'm not sure if this has been suggested or not, and if I missed it in a prior post I apologize.

Bluetooth uses a non-secure radio frequency that spans approximately 30 feet. With devices that are enabled to share data, bluetooth can link up and "talk" to eachother.

So today, my friend asked me if I thought it was possible to hack into someones phone and access their addressbook, phone etc...using another bluetooth device. Honestly, I didn't know if it was possible. With all the talk about vzw getting sued for bluetooth crippling, t-mobile getting some bad press for a server being hacked into we decided to test that theory. Her...

I use BT and the convienience of the wireless file transfer far exceeds the issue of someone possibly hacking my phone address book which exists on a SIM card and is backed up in many places. IN order to do this there has to be perfect conditions in public places.

Besides BT does have a code that can be entered on both units. I'll bet many of your home wireless systems are not encrypted and can be accessed by people who dont take the proper measures so can BT. Im in Myrtle BEach right now in a condo and piggy backing off someones wireless system at this moment. LOL

Its a convienient excuse for Verizon, but the fact is they wanted to protect their data revenue by not allowing file transfer in their phones using BT. Anytime you are dea...

I have two things to say to you, Kingfrog:
Cabir.H and Cabir.I

Bluetooth is far from a secure connection. If it is as great as everyone seems to think then why did I receive a memo about how to handle customer issues related to these viruses which can only be transmitted by bluetooth?

You always find something smart to say. any ways is it only with the headset or is it with all other BT equiptment that ask for a code? Also, with BT doesn't both sides have to agress to the connection?

Kingfrog,
Don't embarrass yourself here in front of people who are industry insiders.
There is something you need to know about wireless companies:

1) They only release results (gross adds, net adds, churn, ARPU, etc. quarterly.
2) Those results are not released until the parent company releases earnings information.
3) There is so much more going on in the industry and in each carrier than the few rants you see here. You make it sound like only Cingular is making long range plans and everyone else is quivering in their boots, reacting to them. The reality is every carrier has a long term strategy. Adjustments are made periodically due to market and economic forces but for the most part no carrier is flagellating like you would like t...

In your Verizon arrogance you believe only insiders could possibly understand business. In your Verizon arrogance your wrong. I do know what and how important APRU is to a wireless company and it is obvious with the fierce entry into data delivery as well as Themes, Text messaging etc.

You seem to think you are privy t this information because your paycheck has the Verizon logo on it. As a matter of fact all this is available to any member of the public who is privy to the investment community. Verizon is not a private company and in being public all financials are available to (ignorant, idiotic, stupid, and other names I may have been labeled with here) which only serves to increase my disdain for the company and know it all employees....

Instead of giving credit where it may be due even for the more savy than I, you all have nothing to say but insult, name call, and generally act like kids who just got what they consider a high powered position in the wireless industry which ranks just above car sales incidently in public perception. You represent that semtiment very well.

Generally people resort to name calling, insults, and general tomfoolery because they don't like someone. That someone is you. We don't like you. It's plain and simple. No one likes you on this site because you come off as a jackass about 99.7% of the time. Even Phoenix thinks you're an idiot...and he's on your side.

There is password protection on the bluetooth device that can prevent people from connecting. I sat in a movie theatre once before the show started and activated bluetooth on my T616(at the time) and did a search for other devices. Though I found 5-6, I could only get into/connect to one of them. The others were password protected. I think if people were more educated on there devices you wouldn't see 90% of the problems that are seen everyday.

Bluetooth insecure? Hello? It's because most of the vendors chose not to implement the small measure of security available in the BT specs to make phones and other devices easy to use.

Try a Google for bluejacking bluesniff bluesnarf bluetooth hacking.

Most of the newness of bluejacking has worn off as there's not much to steal, just annoy, so far. Address books, re-set phone.

aye....meaning I can hook it up, understand how it connects, troubleshoot connections (enough to do my job): but why would I really dig into hacking into someone elses phone, getting by passwords if they're there, learning how it's encrypted, find ways of piggybacking onto someone elses turf. I don't typically go into movie theaters and whip out an ipaq and say hmmm lets see what I can find. (however, if I do recall, a couple others here claimed they have) which is why I asked the question and clarified if anyone else has dug in deeper than I have to help me learn and understand. I'd be an idiot if I was interested in learning more not to ask 🙂

No, the sidekick/sk2 doesn't have BT. We really don't know exactly how her information was obtained, it's a very sensitive case , so they aren't releasing much information. For all we know, she left it sitting out somewhere long enough to let someone pick it up and flip it open and say hmmm lets forward some stuff to my e-mail so I can post it on the internet. There are other rumors that someone got onto her account online by guessing the security question for "forgot password?" feature. They have also claimed that it was an easy question. So, officially nobody knows. All we can do right now is speculate. Anything else you may hear right now is probably just rumors. Nothing conclusive has been said officially.
