Is VZW's selection of phones that bad?

Seems like the biggest complaint I hear in this forum is the "poor selection" of phones available on Verizon Wireless. Most everyone seems to find the call quality and customer service very good, or at least acceptable.

In checking out Cingular's selection, I don't find any phones there getting the high marks of the phone here at VZW. Phones like the LG 7000 and LG8000, and Moto V710, Samsung A670, etc., all get very high marks here, and are all quality phones. Cingular has the Razr phone which looks really cool, but is expensive and gets an avg rating below 4.0.
So what's missing? Just better bluetooth or other features? As far as phone available with Cameras, Speakerphones, Voice Dial, and, most of all good call quality and recepti...

I think they come out with too many phones but not enough testing because I too have seen alot of verizon customers complain about their phones on here. Heck, I had a verizon customer come in to my store today to port his number from verizon over to Alltel because of the head sets and service. Most of the problems they have with thier phones, other carriers dont.

That's not neccessarily true. I have Cingular and I have had nothing but problems with my phones. Granted they were all motorolas but they finally exchanged for a Nokia and I still had problems. EVERY carrier has problems with phones

Im not sure about other carriers but I know vz tests their phones a little too much and thats why sometimes they can be a tad behind on getting them out.

They have a program where a few thousand employees demo the phones before they come out and each employee is responsible for submitting feedback on the handset. They read every single one.

The one thing the reps cant test is the detailed settings and insides of the phone. I heard that when nokia first submitted their test numbers back in the day they litterally made them up just to get vzw to put the phones on the shelf. Vzw got wind of it and thats why they dropped them for a while until they got a nokia that worked as well as they said it did.

What you may be seeing is the fact that handset manufacturers are slower to bring out some features for CDMA phones than they are for GSM phones. That is, except for in Korea where the phones have 5mp cameras and game pads, etc.
Verizon didn't help itself when it restricted bluetooth on the V710.
Most wireless customers seem to go for the free or almost free phones which don't have all of the features the GSM crowd seems to gloat about. So many of the posts here are relevant to only a few customers who demand these phone features.
Sprint's phone selection has typically been more feature laden than Verizon's but EVDO will probably change that.

Verizon's phone selection isn't bad, if you like large LG or Samsung clamshell style phones, most with a camera.

Some of us prefer small Nokia bar style phones. The option of full features (bluetooth) instead of the Get It Now scam would be nice as well. For us, Verizon's phone selection is pathetic.

The upcoming Nokia 6235i is close to what I'd like to see Verizon offer, though it does have a camera and no bluetooth. The 6255i looks interesting, but it's a clamshell and Verizon will probably cripple its features.

Cingular has the 3120 and 6230, which cover the low and high-end market for small bar phones.

I currently have a Nokia 3589i and like it, as well as the newer 6015i. They are good no-nonsense phones. But they are a bit ...

Couldn't agree more. If you want a trimode non-camera flip phone, pretty much your only choices are the Samsung 650 (which doesn't have an external screen) or a Moto V260 (only carried by Radio Shack).

They can do better here. 😕

Yeah but the demand for bar phones is about zero now a days. Why would a person really want a bar phone unless they need it for a rugged environment in which case they usually never like "all that extra stuff"

I think they could have more of a selection for non camera higher end phones. BT, external CID, Speakerphone, Voice act. etc

I remember the day when bar phones was what people wanted, a flip phone was not the in thing. Now, all you get is flip phones, it is hard to find bar phones. I remember I used to have the startac, and everyone wanted the nokia's bar phones, those were the things to have, now, nokia is hard to find.

we used to them candybar phones... 😁

The flip phones are a fad. There is no logical reason for a flip phone, They are cumbersome and some require two hands to open. My T637 is less bulky and does not need two screens or a hinge that can break or an antennae protruding out.

Try holding flip phone without your hands.
