LG 8950 vs. LG 5500, other simpler phones?

OK, I've decided I want to use my NE2 credit to get a phone I won't have to pay additionally for. Have an iPod; not concerned w. music (though I liked the Chocolate 3 in the store and I think I can get it really cheap).

Anyway, the LG 5500 seemed like a solid little phone. I was a tad concerned with the fact it doesn't accept a memory card, but I never used that feature with my recently deceased LG 8300 in nearly three years of use. The 5500 seems to get good reviews.

But now I see the 8950. Unfortunately, all I can find is one biased review: "WORST PHONE EVER MADE!" I'm sure this is either hyperbole or the user got a reject. I do see the 8950 has a slightly better camera and supports a memory card.

Any advice here (and that include...

I wouldn't buy any of those cheap phones. I'm testing the new Bolder Boulder, and it's first class now.

You might not buy them, but I like the fact I can get them for free (more tempting now than ever), and the 8300 was a solid, solid phone for me for nearly three years.

I would like to read reviews of this new/improved Boulder; I despised the old one but liked its build. However, I didn't like the keypad or the fact it didn't have predictive text input whereby you could type just a few letters of a word.

Still, let me know how it works out.

coo coo to me a cell phone is to important of a tool to go cheap. If you enjoyed the 8300 I would recommend just getting the 8350.

The ear piece volume is fixed with the new Bolder Boulder, and the speaker phone is loud and clear, but hey if you don't like the key pad then get a free phone.

Hey man.

It's better than the Adventure. I have to Adventure too, and the new Bolder Boulder blows it away. everyone always talked up the speaker phone on the adventure i never thought it was that great even with the front facing speaker. i have the volume up one notch on the new bolder boulder and its loud, no distortion.

the ear piece volume is better too, not mega better then the original with software 09, but a definite noticeable improvement. It's a keeper now for me. other than that it is the same phone.

The 8950 is not an LG phone, it is a UTStarcom phone under just the Verizon brand. I have no personal experience with the 8950 yet, but the UTStarcom phones that have been in that same series of phones have not been the greatest performing phones. For what you are looking for I would consider the LG vx8350, or consider waiting for the vx8360 which should be out sometime later in December or January. You may also want to look at the Motorola W755. I am not normally a Motorola fan, but that phone has been a really good performing phone.

Otherwise, it would probably be a much better phone. 🙂

I realized that after I posted. Right now, pricewise (and not wishing to change my service which the Choc. 3 would require), I'm pretty much choosing between the LG 5500 and the Moto W755. I don't think I can afford to wait for the LG 8360; haven't heard when it's coming anyway.

Are you talking about the America's Choice II plan? I thought a Chocolate could work on that. I didn't know it required Nationawide 😲

Nope, Chocolate 3 requires the Nationwide plans (due to Dashboard).

The Moto 755 is actually a very good phone. I have one and would buy that over an LG anyday...hah, not an LG fan at all, but still...Moto more solid, better reception, feels like a better made phone and performs well. Has the typical Moto lag at times, but for phone quality, clarity and reception, it's very good.

My long agonizing search is over and I went with the Moto 755.

As for the Boulder, I just can't go back no matter how good the sound is now. The experience was that bad for me this summer.

I know.

Enough good ratings, however, to encourage me. I've spent waaaay too much time searching for a replacement phone. Can't wait any longer, and sometimes research starts entering the ridiculous phase.

Check out the 8350. If you have a new every 2 credit, it will end up being free after mail in rebate (in most stores)

It Is a step up from the 5500 with a micro sd slot, a better camera, and an evdo radio (meaning stronger signal, better battery life, etc where you are covered by 3g) All around it is a better phone.

I got my LG 8350 today. Love it in so many ways, but the camera is like looking through a fog...My LG 8300 had a crisp picture and took great pics. I didn't read anyones comments about disappointment in the quality of the camera in the forums. I don't think this is right...any thoughts? yes, I did take off the clear plastic protective covering.

Try cleaning off the lens, checking the zoom options, etc.

If there is still an issue with the camera, it might be a defective lens. Most people who buy that phone love the camera so it is not a known issue.

I would take a good look at the boulder. Ive moved on to smartphones, and prolly wont be going back anytime soon. But I sold my friends boulder on craigslist when he got the storm so I had some extensive time with it. Its got a sharp look, it should def last 2 years, and it has just about every feature you could want.

When you get a phone and plan on actually keeping it for 2 years. The phone needs to satisfy you now and be able to growth with you as your needs/wants change overtime. I think the boulder is only 50 bucks on a 2 year deal and might be even cheaper if you have a NE2 credit.

I can understand you not wanting to spend a lot of money, but you dont get any cash back with the NE2 so I would make sure that I used every ...

Good post there Chris.

Plus with the updated version the few shortcoming it had are gone. When looking at the phones verizon offers the G'zOne really does stand out as a solid phone...way more than all the other regular plastic crap they sell.
