Is messanging considered as texting?

I currently have Sprint and was thinking of switching over to Verizon but was wondering one thing.

I do a lot of chatting on AIM and MSN messenger. Does Verizon count this type of messaging as being part of the data plan (internet) or text plan?

I believe some carriers use to count such messaging as texts, so I'm just wondering.

Hi there Dolphis,

I love to use AIM on my mobile phone too, it rocks! Ok now, Verizon does charge you for the KB sent and received as well as counting each IM message as a text message. So your best bet is to get a good data package covering both internet and texting.

and you'll only use KB. I've used this app since 2005. I love it. I can chat on AIM, Yahoo, and MSN simultaneously. (I'm on AT&T though)

But data charges can rack up pretty quick if not on a data plan (VCast, Mobile Web, etc.).
When using the IM messages as text, the Select Plan gives you unlimited messaging without an extra application or monthly charge.

Ok, so after doing some reading on other forums and going to a Verizon store...

Verizon charges IMs as txt IF you use their IM service, but if you use a 3rd party application, you'll be using data and not texts.

With Blackberry phones, IMs are considered E-mail and all you need is the requiered $30 or $50 dollar BB email service.

Further more, the BB Storm's Application store has IM services that are considered data. I guess these are from RIM's own website.

Be careful - if you use the Mobile IM client on a Blackberry it should bill through as texts, just as the same piece of software would bill on a regular phone.

Just go to Blackberry's site from the device...you can download the official clients instead of Verizon's all-in-one mobile IM. Not only do those not charge per txt (only data, which you have to subscribe to with a Blackberry anyway) but they are much better programs as well.
