just saw a commercial in which sprint says they have "America's largest, most dependable 3G network." i highly doubt thats true so why hasn't verizon stepped in on this.

EVERY carrier says that they have the MOST RELIABLE or LARGEST Network...

its the name of the game. you have to be the biggest and the best.

With roaming agreements, everyone can be the largest.. LOL

Sprint doesn't promise THE LARGEST NETWORK etc on their network, without roaming.

When a carrier claims to have the largest network, do they mean the most towers with the largest land area covered, or do they mean the most people signed up? If you signal sucks, I don't care if you have a bazillion subscribers.

That is something that I have been trying to figure out too. I have noticed that there are two different types of service surveys issued by the powers that be. One is how may subscribers a carrier has and the other is the normal user experience. Both I feel aren't very accurate and should be taken with a grain of salt. This would be a very good question to ask the carriers...

When it comes to GSM I know there is a site (gsmworld.com) that shows you the true coverage of a carrier and not their "roaming" coverage; however, I do not know of anything like this on the CDMA site of the equation as I just switched to Verizon from ATT and have been on a GSM network for over 12 years.

No your are correct. There aren't any maps like the ones that gsmworld has. The only thing I found was a general national map that would link you back to the carriers coverage maps. This is why there are so many questions as to which technology is better and who really does have more coverage. Even though I switched from a GSM carrier to a CDMA one I still think GSM (on a global scale) is superior to CDMA. Granted this is my opinion based on data available. I should add though that CDMA has better voice quality than GSM and the tower to tower hand off is more smooth which is where you get the "dropped" calls on the GSM networks.

This is probably why UMB is gone

Always read the fine print! For example when at&t says more bars in more places, in truth they are comparing there old AT&T service area to there "new" service area that Cingular covered before. And of course there coverage is better...but in the end it is still sub par. to VZ

i keep seeing verizon commercials with the "network" in the background supposedly having your back, so to speak, in dead zones. i'm currently away from home (HI) in southern california (frequenting areas in riverside and orange county) and my reception has been horrible compared to sprints. i've even had to reactivate my old razr to get reception at the house where i'm staying (as opposed to my env2). what gives?

It is weird that So. Cali get's off and on VZ reception, I noticed that when I was home visiting old friends in Oct. Tmo is really big out there unless you count all the trendy bastards with there iphone. Gowd that place reminded me how $h!tty it was when I left the first time. S.California is such a dump, enjoy though

haha! this is sad, especially given the fact that SoCal is so heavily populated. i'll just have to make due until i get home. to vzw's credit though, they did give me a free month. that however does not make up for the lost service.

If you are traveling far from your home location, dial *228 and select option 2.

This will tell your phone to find all the towers in the area and generally improves service.

Try doing this every 30-60 days anyway. Verizon is spending a lot of money expanding their network and this will ensure that you are getting the best coverage available for your area.

thanks, but i've done this several times already. for some unknown reason vzw seems to be far behind sprint in terms of coverage throughout southern california (or at least in the areas that i've been spending time in). and i'm not way out in the boondocks either ☚ī¸

Sprint claims they have the largest , most dependable 3g network"

VZW claims they have the nations largest most reliable 3g network.

both are technically correct about the largest claim. Sprint has the largest 3g network in terms of square mileage covered. VZW has the largest network in terms of % of the population covered.

as for the reliability that depends on the location obviously but I think most of us know who wins that on a nationwide level, and its not even that close 😛

The reason Verizon hasn't stepped in is because Verizon doesn't play the "ad campaign wars". Sprint has also run an ad with "saving you $240 over Verizon and ATT". Desperate times call for desperate measures. Sprint is losing millions of customers and AT&T and Verizon are winning out. They need to pull out all the stops...that's also why they cried foul on Verizon's PTT commercial making fun of the "well our phone's came with holsters" bit. But when you're a company going down fast...you turn to the underhanded techniques. But oh well...the truth is in the numbers. Look at who's making a profit, who's got lower churn, who's got higher net post-paid adds, who's got more customers, who wins more awards etc.

Hello there! My name is Dan Hesse, I'm the CEO of Sprint. I SAID, I AM THE CEO OF SPRINT! Thank you. Ok, I am here to tell you about our NOW network. We have the nation's largest and fastest 3G network (thanks to Verizon!) and to show you how committed we are to serving you, we are offering you free service for a year when you sign up for a two-year agreement. And, to sweeten the pot, we will give you any phone with a bluetooth headset for FREE!

At Sprint, we want you to know that despite what you've been hearing, we are not desperate for your business. So we've lost a few million customers, no big deal. Sprint has over 500 million customers in the country, which beats Verizon and AT&T anyday. So come to one our few remaining Spr...

Hello there, I'm Dan Hesse the CEO of Sprint. I SAID SPRINT! You know, the wireless phone company that bought out Nextel in 2005. Never mind what Nextel is, just listen to what I have to say!

To show you all that Sprint has the nation's best 3G network, I am now going to call my mother on my Sprint phone, and I will put it on speaker:

(flips open phone and dials)

Beeeeeee---eee-e-eeeP.

Mom: He--o?
Dan: Hi Mom, it's me, Dan Hesse, CEO of Sprint!
Mom: Van Nesse the CPO of Rent?!
Dan: No MOM, it's me, Danny!
Mom: Oh. What the ---are you----I gotta tell you son, ----ok, goodbye. (click).
Dan: Hello?! Hello?!

Camera Man: Um... Mr. Hesse, you may wanna think of a new commercial idea...!

Verizon certainly does play those wars, they just do it in court.

In court is one thing. In commercials is another. Flame war commercials are pointless and Verizon always keeps from doing that. The "well ours comes with holsters" was not a direct shot at Nextel...it was taken that way (and very possibly intended)...but it was done in a way that was funny. But...again...desperation makes you do desperate things when your company is only just sticking around until someone buys you...

Well let me tell you, it was absolutely intended to be a direct shot at Nextel. That is one of the last major groups of customers that have been somewhat loyal to that company. AT&T and Verizon never really had a viable option until now and they WANT to steal from them.

When Verizon execs are sending out video files of that commercial before it launched and were saying "check this out, we are going to crush Nextel" I have no doubt it was intended.

I read whateverworks' response and I stopped there.

All this 3g BS being thrown about is all in response to the Iphone 3g. Nothing more, nothing less. The funny thing is, ATT's 3g network is not that great so Apple trying to point out the upgrade from edge is too funny.

Sprint is just capitalizing on this renewed interest in 3g based technology.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Sprint Nextel Corp plans to cut costs and use cash to pay back its $3 billion of debt due in 2009 and 2010, rather than raise new financing in tight capital markets, its finance chief said on Monday.

Chief Financial Officer Bob Brust plans to prepare a cost cutting plan for the board in January that may include layoffs, more outsourcing and a reduction in network expansion plans.

"The main focus for 2009 is cash, keeping the company completely liquid in this economy," Brust told Reuters. "We're going to carefully look at the cost structure .... Everything's on the table."

He said that Sprint, which has alr...

NEW YORK -(Dow Jones)- Shortly after joining Sprint Nextel Corp. (S), Chief Financial Officer Robert Brust stood up on stage during a management meeting and said the company would no longer be buying bottles of water.

The announcement came as a shock to the staff, and for a while the buzz around the Overland Park, Kan., headquarters was the switch to pitchers of tap water.

Brust argued it was wasteful and not environmentally sound.

"Now, no one walks in front of me with a bottle of water now," he said.

It was one of a myriad of cost-cutting moves - small and large - designed to make the e...

I know, right! And what's even sadder, is that they want to sell off Nextel, but due to the credit crunch, they CAN'T. If they could sell off Nextel, I think they should sell it to Comcast. Comcast wants to get into the wireless market, so let them take over Nextel.
