Did anyone use this today since it came out?? I couldn't find much info in Onesource/Infoman about how it works. Does the customer dial it from the phone they want to activate? From what I read it pulls the ESN # without having the customer look it up. I was wondering how the customer would be able to put in letters thru an IVR especially with letters A-F.

I had an ESN change I needed to do, and didn't need to do it in any hurry, so I waited for the new *228,3.

When you press 3, the automated message tells you you need to call from the phone you want to activate and to power down the other phone, then tells you it's going to check information on your phone. You hear elevator music for a few seconds, then it comes back and asks you for the mobile number you're trying to activate that phone on.

I attempted to activate the ESN on two different numbers, one which currently has a Peal on it, the other which has an LG 5200 on it, and either worked. I was trying to program a Nokia 6315. When that didn't work, I also tried to program an i760 on either of the lines with no success.

This sys...

Thanks for the great info! 🙂

Do you remember back in the day when you attempted to do an ESN change thru the internet if there was any difference in feature from the old phone to the new phone it would give you an error message to call customer service? For example chaning from a camera to non camera phone, pda to non pda, or vcast to non vcast capable?

I think that this is going to be like that because the IVR isn't going to be able to explain the different features that may need added or removed. So when you tried to put a the nokia phone on the line that had the Pearl (?) then it would had to have removed the data plan. Not sure why the Nokia phone would not have gone on the # with the LG 5200. I think the LG 5200 is not vcast capa...

It allows a customer to change an ESN by just dialing *228 send and selecting option 3. They must call from the phone they are trying to activate and it will automatically pull the ESN from the phone without the cusotmer having to look for it and program the phone.

Based on what the first replier put it won't work if theres any type of difference in features of the phone (vcast to non vcast, camera to non camera phone, etc)

I looked at VZW.com and I could only find info on *228 option 2 to update the PRL.

so is this a way to activate a new/old phone using *228,3 instead of using the internet- activate phone option or going to a store?

Exactly. Except the only type of ESN changes that you can do there is previously owned equipement or phones ordered thru 3rd parties (ebay, craigslist, etc) not upgrades, Certified Like New replacements, or insurance replacements.
