Question on product focus

Will the focus on "simple" yet solid, well-built, excellent-battery life, camera flip phones start dying out now that they all seem to have music players, V-Cast, etc.?

I would think there's a market for people who want the above and not too much more, but want it better constructed, more durable, more reliable than what VZ is marketing as the entry-level phones.

Many like me have nice MP3 players and aren't interested in music features on their phones, and also don't want to pay for extra services like VCast.

It is my belief that there will always be a focus on the "simple" phones. Vzw recognizes that although there is a large and growing market for new data products and features, there will always be those individuals that need to keep it simple.

Some people and businesses, cant have a camera phone, or use txt. Some people can barely even figure out how to turn their phones on (any of you that have been around the store long enough knows that old people will stand in line an hour when all they needed to do was push the red "power" button and their problem is solved).

Most makers, such as lg, samsung, and motorola have a pretty solid line out for entry level phones. true, some of these models arent of the greatest of quality.

there are some good entry level phones, you just don't hear about them. Verizon and other carriers make big money on internet/texting/email/music and all the other crap.
They would rather not sell a phone with no extras because they make less data revenue.

With that said the lg5400, moto385, and many more entry level phones are really good models for the money

I should have added texting to the simple package I described, though I prefer LG's "Word" input through a standard numeric keypad to the slideout, full keyboard.

I'm just not interested in music or video, etc. However, if the music playback features could be used for voice memos somehow, maybe I would.

Sorry, Boulder is what I last got and am sending back. The only thing it is of the above list is "well-built."

Battery life is the opposite of excellent, more like abyssmal, UI is gummy and glitchy, and worst -- the sound quality is so bad my friends and family don't like talking to me anymore because neither of us can hear each other very well. Especially the incoming; worst I've ever experienced in a cell phone over 10 years of buying them.

Can't believe anyone would recommend this phone. You should try it before posting something like that.

I would just appreciate if someone could design a basic phone (meaning no internet or email) that has a functioning, usable calendar with reminders, not the crap they currently deem to be calendars. Apparently that's too difficult. And I know there's a market for it because I know a lot of people who waste their money on BBs and Treos, etc. just to get a decent calendar.

My ideal phone would be:

Sturdy (Boulder had that down if nothing else); have crystal-clear sound; superb battery life; buttons that were easily defined without looking; the same easy-to-"teach" and predictive Word text input LG used on its VX8300; a good camera by cell standards; memory for at least 500 contacts and even more for text messages; a great calendar w. reminders and an easy-to-use voice memo feature.

I won't be using VZW's internet service ever (I can simply text Google for most of my needs anyway, and with an unlimited text plan, that's free). Nor will I use VCast or music.

And what I don't understand is the person who buys a cell phone every TWO years and wants a durable, reliable, basic model that lasts gets stuck with the crappy "mid-range" phones (what's up with that??) and the expensive, well built, all bells and whistle pda phones are sold to people who are constantly upgrading and somehow go through a phone every 2 months. So why the durability? So they can resell on ebay? I'm missing something here, Verizon...

People upgrading cellphones every couple of months have a problem. It's no different than a gambling addiction.

WTF? I know various people who like new gadgets and upgrade often but comparing cell phone changing to gambling...well that is a bit extreme...I have yet to meet or hear of anyone who has lost their car, house, family ahhhh pretty much everything because they upgrade cell phones frequently. WOW!

No, I don't think that's what he meant...it's just that upgrading a phone every 2 months, as some people apparently do when they recite all of the various models of phones they have owned, is a bit extreme, that's all.

To be honest with my Dare I do not pay for any extra service like vcast. I do not want an MP3 player. It makes no sense to have an additional device just for that reason. All you need to do is connect your phone directly to your computer and use windows media player and transfer the songs directly to the phone. given I have an 8 gig microsd but still you should be able to do it all the same. my phone and my original Juke both worked the same way. Never did I have to pay for any music services other then the ringtones.

Oh I would, but I was gifted an iPod Touch this summer and have been enjoying that as my MP3 player.

😎 Ok well that helps to lol. I am not as gifted but find having the mp3 feature andthe ability to use it when say using the internet or texting or w/e i am doing, makes it very functional.
