Firmware updates

I know I may sound like noob for asking this question and it may have been asked before but I dont feel like searching for it but is there a way I can upgrade my firmware myself instead having to go to a vzw store? I only ask cause with my crazy work schedule I dont get a chance to get to the store very often, and I wanted to try out the visual voicemail on my voyager but I need my firmware updated first.

Thanks in advance.

someone correct me if I'm wrong but I think some of the latest phones can be upgraded over the air. other than that its a trip to the VZW store.

Even if the phone can do it, you'll be old and grey before VZW releases an update! I am still waiting for them to fix the XV6800 problems.

WinMo always has problems. Windows will never be bug-free.

Poor excuse.

I do not expect ANY OS to be bug-free, but I do expect timely fixes for well-known issues such as the phone repeatedly needing soft resets, and the lousy BT performance.

Everyone else has theirs fixed, why not VZW?

Winmo blows, PERIOD. There is no vzw influence in the windows OS whatsoever from what I can tell. So explain to me again how the burdenof responsibility lies on the carrier, I always avoid anything that microsoft gets involved in.

Search this site for "Mogul" and "XV6800" and you will find tons of posts relating to problems, some of which have been fixed by HTC for Sprint and others using the HTC 6800, but not for VZW.

I consider VZW tampering with the default BT stack that came from HTC to be "VZW influence" but that may not be part of WinMo.

Other providers have WinMo 6.1 available, but not VZW.

WHY NOT?

Regarding your "WinMO blows" comment, I like everything it does, such as a full Outlook client to which I can push my email-notes-calendar-contacts from my Exchange server, as well as Excel for my mileage file. My Palm had a sort-of Excel version, but it was SUPER SLOW.

Show me a winmo phone, and I'll show you a 50% return rate. You say that Sprint has fixed some of Winmo's issues? That only reinforces my opinion. I don't think any software developer or handset manufacturer should be allowed to get away with relying on the carrier to fix their sub-standard product.

Microsoft releases an unstable OS and just lets the carriers discover & fix the bugs? That's unnacceptable to me and the carrier fixing the issue only allows microsoft to continue with that bad behavior without any accountability. They need to re-think their QA startegy or get out of the mobile software market.

I did not say that Sprint fixed WinMo's issues. I stated regarding the updates, "...some of which have been fixed by HTC for Sprint and others...."

The update comes from HTC, with Sprint's and other providers' blessings and/or modifications. The WinMo OS runs on top of that firmware and/or in conjunction with it.

VZW is the last one I know of to get its updates released for this phone. I believe the BT issues are not Microsoft issues at all, but are base firmware issues that have existed since day one.

When a Blackberry can do mail-contacts-notes-calendar the same way it is in Outlook on my laptop or desktop, and NOT require BES added to an Exchange server environment to do it, then I might look at it.

WinMo devices have native a...

For me, I would not at all be comfortable with putting all of my eggs in one basket with a WinMo device. I have yet to see a phone that can run that OS without lagging, crashing, or freezing. Most phones that run winmo aren't built right for it--they too often lack the processor power or memory space. 😕

I am not sure what you mean by all eggs in one basket. If you mean a phone and PDA, the same can be said for Palm devices and possibly BlackBerry as well. Perhaps you just meant having all that on WinMo vs. the all eggs in one Palm or BB basket?

The sweet thing about it is that all my data resides on my Exchange server and is synced to the phone throughout the day. If I lose the phone or it gets stolen, I can remotely wipe it back to factory default with a command from the server (except for the MicroSD card! Dang!).

With my Palm Pilot, if I added contacts, notes, or calendar items during the day, there wsa no sync back to the server until I got home and popped it into the cradle. Now it is live, with no additional software needed.

I'm actually impressed that you know exactly what you need & want. So many people out there are just lost in the sauce when it comes to PDA's/smartphones.

I was just saying I wouldn't trust my business & livelihood in a WinMo phone. Example: Any Motorola Q device. Horrendous history, reputation, and reliability. The same thing with Palm's OS as well. It's just as shaky or worse.

I believe that there is a ton of work to do with smartphone OS's.

Geez! I thought maybe I would do something original here, like, maybe, sorta, probably, ANSWER THE QUESTION?

What a novel idea! if you wanna flame on the smartphones or WinMo, get a room. Make a new thread for God's sake!

VZW is in the process of deploying handsets that can do firmware upgrades over the air. I believe the Voyager was one of the last phones released by LG that will NOT have this capability. If you want the new Dare-like interface and visual voicemail for your existing Voyager, you'll have to make a trip to a full-service retail store. In the future that may not be necessary, but I'd give that end an 18 to 24 month resolution.

The Voyager does not have FOTA (Firware over the Air) you can certainly do the upgrade yourself if you can find the firmware file, DLL and LG Download (the program you use to flash LG phones), it's a pretty simple process. The best place to find the software is humpa.com/vzw.

Yup, apparently the new Voyager flash file won't work using LG Download so you'll have to find LGNPST somewhere in the vastness of the internet, no small feat, but I'm sure its out there somewhere.
