Is phone quality going down and down each year?

Two cycles ago (i.e., four years or more) I had the best phone I've ever owned, the sadly discontinued Audiovox CDM 9900. Next, a slight step down but still acceptable LG VX 8300.

Now, after my extreme disappointment in the Boulder, I'm left wondering if there are any phones nearly as solid as that Audiovox I sorely miss. Any other phones near release I could wait on? I need to send this Boulder back. I'm skeptical about the Moto Adventure's design, but it may have to do. Reports on its battery aren't promising, though.

This was never the case with my old phones. What's up with Verizon? Are they focusing solely on little toy phones with slideout keyboard for teens?

Who said they made hardware? Of course they don't, but they provide it. You missed my point entirely.

Um, no, I didn't. You're complaining about equipment quality (hardware). Verizon doesn't make hardware (equipment).

What did I miss?

the fact that verizon contacts the cell manufactorer and tells them what they want in the phone and what price point. moto doesnt just make a phone and call up verizon and hope and pray that they want to use it.

verizon calls up moto and says, "hey we want a rugged mil spec phone that plays music, has BT, blah blah blah, and we want you to do it for $xx.xx per handset."

so yea, its partially verizons fault

The mobile phone makers are constantly trying to make phone way cheaper than for they sell them for. Then again so does all other electronics.

I honest oppinion I think the quality of phone should also depend on intelligence of its user. I personaly own LG enV2 and have messaging only plan. I love this phone and its very sturdy. My friend who works for verizon owns one as well, she just can't believe most of the times that phone can shatter so baddly from a drop to a carpered floor.....unless they were hurling at it.

I feel your pain but trust me just get the Adventure, you'll be so happy with this phone! Get over the Boulder and take another leap of faith!

Are the Adventures is VZ stores now? I want to test one out before I take the plunge because I only get one shot at a replacement.

Trust me, llama, Verizon has a major say in what phones get produced for its users. They're the ones contracting with the manufacturers.

I dont think that the blame can be placed soley on VZW or the manufactuer. The majority of the blame should be placed on society. Society wants those "text crazy teen" phones, not just teenagers either.

I have sold more Blackberry Curves to middle aged women than I have to corporate users or teens. It is the keep up with the Jones' mentality, and my paycheck surely does appreciate it.

If you are looking for a rugged phone that has PTT I would reccomend the Adventure, I am really not a Motorola fan at all, but I feel they finally got it right with this one. As for battery concerns, lets be realistic, you only NEED the battery to make through a typical 16 hour day, it can charge when you sleep, or if it really needs it, spring the extra ...

I think in most cases, you're right. But I don't think the Boulder was screened well at all. And as far as battery, what if you wanted to take the phone on a weekend camping or boating trip?

It should be much, much better than it is. Especially when previous phones (even with lots of features like the Audiovox I had years back) had good battery life.

If you plan to go camping or boating I would once again spring the $20 on a car charger for the camping trip, and as far as boating, if you are spending a weekend on a boat with no electricity, that is going to be a long weekend my friend.

In regards to the Audiovox 9900 that you continue to call feature packed, it was in it's day. The audiovox is not even on the same level as newer phones with either features or technology and no one should try to trick themselves into thinking otherwise.

I dont mean to go off on a rant supporting Verizon, heck, I hate Verizon, but I dont feel that one poorly produced phone should produce such a broad statement about their handsets.

Maybe, but it was well-built, looked good, had a decent battery and made crystal-clear calls.

...Because everyone (or so they think) wants the latest "do everything but change the oil in my car" phones, and yes, the decent basic phone inventory has suffered as a result. A phone is apparently now a status symbol. What I don't understand is if they don't want to develop new basic ones, then at least leave the oldies but goodies out there for purchase - which they don't do either...grr
My personal favorite was the E815. Now THAT was a great phone. Good to see Moto making a comeback with the 755 which I have and love and the Adventure which seems to be getting rave reviews...

I totally feel you on this one. I had old AT&T TDMA service back before Cingular took over. PoS for coverage, but I had a great corporate rate calling plan at the time. Later I switched over to VZW with an old LG 3200.

My next move was to the same Aud9900 you speak of. My father-in-law is still using that handset today, and he's a rather, shall we say "high risk" user working casino construction in Las Vegas. The leather case on the phone basically turns it into mil-spec, minus the H2O protection, so it may as well be an Adventure for all he uses it for. GREAT phone if all you wanted was a phone.

Before sending my phone over to him, I upgraded to the same LG 8300 you have, which I feel is just as durable. My toddler has thr...

Motorola just needs to make an update of the E815 with a better charging port, and I'll be happy. I love that phone. It's just a shame that VZ Navigator isn't available on it.
