Question from an idiot customer...

My daughter just got the Palm Centro, but I have data blocked on her phone. Does that mean she cannot send or receive picture messages (MMS I guess?) because of that block? On her old phone she could send and receive pictures and it didn't cost anything extra. I realize this may not be the case with a data device, but I'm stupid when it comes to these, because I just don't need or want them. Thanks in advance for your input.

she should still be able to send messages. Texts dont use up data as far as I know.

100% correct.

A lot of customers miss this fact... The good news is the Centro will work with the 29.99 data plan.

Thanks for the input. She's in college and can't afford that data plan at the moment; but it's not going to kill her to not have pix messaging, she was just used to it.

dumb question, but why in the world would you get a Centro and block the data on it??

I get that request all the time for Berries. People see the advertising for the device and think cool phone, not sophisticated phone that does everything- for $29.99 more a month.

i just hate it when ppl want a BB or palm or any other smartphone but no data. i mean thats what the phone is made for, that DATA. if you dont need the data, then you dont need that phone and its not the phone for you.

also FYI - having a blackberry does NOT make you cool

simma down...

some people just want a nice calendar, a qwerty board, and a reliable OS. I know data is key on BB's, but I could understand people that might want one without the data plan.

i actually had my first ever customer today that wanted that, but he wanted the centro (which my idiot RM took from me monday, so i lost a sale because of it, grrr....)

that is a legit reason to want it w/o the data, but that is not why most of my "potential" customers want it. they want it cuz they think it makes them cool, or just because its a blackberry.

you cant honestly tell me that the 20 so 13-16 yr olds that come in here everyday and point and ooh and awe over the pearl and whine and cry to mommy and daddy for it, want it for its extensive calendar features or OS.

thats what annoys me. stupid, whiney, brats that wont shut up and cry when they are told no.

ahhh.. breathe...breathe....i gonna go punch this one :twisted...

Yes, breathe. My kid just texts and calls people basically, with a few pix thrown in between. She does not need a data phone, but the other phones drive her crazy as far as texting goes. She also loves the "chat" style texting of the Centro. She's not 13-16, she's in college and having a nice calendar is a big plus with her work and school schedule. She paid full price for it too (Mommy did not) so she bought what she wanted. It was a sale, after all, and she won't be returning it, because she LOVES it....

From a sales perspective, it's frustrating, but I see a lot of people who like the additional features of the device but have no use for email or web, at least not at $30-$45 a month. Me, I used my pda to get around my firewall at work and to keep track of my office email when I was away from the computer. I was on a $25 unlimited plan and that's all I paid, otherwise I might have just used my device for contact/appointment management and texting instead of email.

But why is it frustrating if you sell the phone?? Do you guys lose something or not get a bonus if someone blocks the data??? I mean, really, I don't know - maybe you do...

well yeah, their data % goes down and then they lost their raises/promotions

also, some stores will charge a different price to non-data customers

if you go online, none of these issues will come up 🙂

We have to charge more for a smartphone without data attached to it.
Also, we get paid commission on data, I want to see the customer get more so I can get more.

Fair enough. The average customer really doesn't know this though. I just thought a sale is a sale is a sale. Mmhmm. If you ever get to voice your opinions or input to the "powers that be", maybe it's time Verizon marketed a functional phone/camera/calendar - emphasis on the calendar - device without internet/email capabilities. I don't know - the 5 days I spent with a BB Pearl I wanted to shoot myself in the head and kill the thing with a sledgehammer. People think they are cool? I think they're ridiculous unless you absolutely need it for your job. I am sure there is a market for the PDA without data.

Ah, because I pay the bill and she's in college and can't afford any more bills at the moment. I tried to talk her into a different phone of course because I suspected this, but she bought the phone and I got tired of arguing.... 😡
