Rumor Patrol: AT&T's response to VZW-Alltel merger: T-Mobile/AT&T Merger?

I heard rumors that AT&T is responding to this great new merger by trying to buy T-Mobile. They don't want to be second, and merging with T-Mobile will make them #1 again.

Does anyone know if this rumor is that true? I hope not 😲

phew! Thanks for that, I was starting to get worried lol. Because that would have definitely been bad if both GSM carriers merged. AT&T would completely monopolize that market. I think the FCC will allow the VZW/Alltel merger because there is still some CDMA competition with Sprint and other smaller companies...

VZW is number 1 and when LTE comes into effect, VZW/Vodafone will be global #1! 😎

They wont. End of Story. Plus T mobile is way to big and it would create a GSM Monopoly in the US. This would never fly.

ok, at&t buying tmobile would be a monopoly, but vz buying alltel is not? just because sprint is still out there doesn't mean that they can still be considered as a 'carrier'. Vz buying alltel will create a small monopoly and that's why i hope the fcc DENIES this merger...

Sprint isn't the only CDMA carrier that would compete with VZW. There are still other smaller companies out there, so it would not be a monopoly.

BTW, are Boost mobile, Virgin, etc. CDMA or GSM?

Boost = iDen (Sprint network)
Virgin = CDMA (Sprint network)

you're right, that's what I thought. I was worried for a sec lol I read that on some cell site, I just wanted confirmation because a T-Mobile/AT&T juggernaut would be disastrous IMHO

Why? AT&T doesnΓƒΒ’Γ’β€šΒ¬β„’t need T-mobile and what about regulatory hurdles? There will be billions upon billions of dollars worth of divestitures, which would probably create another T-mobile plus DT, would never sell T-mobile.

agreed. DT Makes a huge ammount of their yearly income off of T-mobile ever since the german government broke up DT's monopoly on landlines in germany
