Question about the VZW/Alltel Merger

dst4life

Jun 5, 2008, 6:59 PM
Where I stay, the 2 top companies as far as coverage is att and vzw. Alltel sucks here (at least in my opinion) but everyone I know with vzw is happy with their service. Now I am not under contract with anyone but was thinking between att and vzw. The prices seem to be the same. But my question is will vzw keep the my circle and if they do when would it go into effect? I would love it if they did because all the people I talk all have different cell phone carriers. Thanks for any helpful info. 🙂

what's really great is having 80 million people to talk to for free... I'm doubting they keep it for that reason, but it would be nice to have like 5 extra numbers or so to call for free outside the network.

My circle isn't a network thing. Verizon could have done it if they wanted to even before all this

He is right.

If Verizon thought they needed a "My Circle" or "Favs" type plan they could have it now.

They are not buying Alltel for their marketing department.

I doubt it. He's saying MyCircle will be GONE, "poof", the second the merger is finalized. I'd think that, at worst, VZW would allow ppl who already have it to keep it (grandfathered), unless/until they change their plan.

I'd agree that its doubtful that VZW will suddenly start offering MyCircle themselves.

I am sure the customers who have it will be allowed to keep it until their agreement is up and maybe beyond. AT&T still has customers here and there with old AT&T Wireless plans and their agreements are long since over.

True. One thing VZW is getting out of this is a whole lot of towers that are already built that they can put 700mhz radios & antennae on to build out the licenses they got in the auction cheaper than building out from scratch.

Verizon mostly wants Alltel for those rural areas where Verizon has little or no presence in to deploy voice and data services, especially with LTE.

Ya know.. when i first got the phone i was really dissapointed with the battery life... but as time has gone on it has gotten way better.

I'm not sure if I can attribute this to conditioning of the battery over time or using the phone less and less after the "newness" wears off. Now I can typically get 2 days of use with some calls, lots of SMS, a little browsing, and email.

YouTube does knock it down rather quickly though.

Well it is a fact that Alltel has the largest network by square footage. Combine this rural coverage with all major cities that Verizon already covers. I would say the merger would create by far the largest and best network in the US.

LTE is the supposed 4G network. It is the next step up, in terms of speed, from CDMA and UMTS. Imagine Fiber Optics ... or perhaps T1/T3 connections over the airwaves ... maybe I'm exaggerating but you get the picture. Hopefully when LTE is fully deployed they will start implementing VoIP - which should bring down costs tremendously, I think. At this point I'm just speculating.

AT&T and VZW have both commited to LTE. VZW's CDMA network is technologically superior than GSM (I still stand by that, ask the engineers) ... but on the consumer level there is a MARGINAL difference in favor of CDMA. So ultimately ... when you decide what carrier you want to use - do your friends/family/colleagues use AT&T or VZW? If most of them uses AT&T ...

I would find out what kind of agreement you have in regards to phone purchases. Regularly ... VZW phones with a 1yr and 2yr contract is a $70 difference. with the agreement that we have ... it's $50 cheaper and the difference between 1yr and 2yr is only $30 (thus I always sign 1yr contracts).

You guys are all assuming people who don't travel much care about how big a footprint a particular Carrier has in the US or Worldwide. I mean really GSM has the best coverage worldwide....and? No one cares.....

It makes no difference. Nothing makes a difference except what do they offer IN THE HOME COVERAGE area. How much does it cost, what phone choices do I have....Thats it. People don't care how many customers a company has, How big it is, Few will ask if there is service in Paduca KY. or North Dakota. LOL

The deal gives corporate employees bragging rights. and takes away the popular My Circle from current Altel customers, many of whom could have chosen Verizon in the first place.

Ah but Kool-Drinker is still relevant and often used term for those who blindly follow a corporate mindset and fan boy is not an insult.Im a fan boy of GSM.....ONLY becasue of what the technology allows me to do with Carrier interference. Hell I can move my phonebook from phone to phone all by my lonesome (and it does not cost $10) Yes I am a major fan-boy of GSM and the Nokia N95 series.

While I understand not on the same page, your point was originality, not what it means to the business world.

"you guys really really need to come up with something original"

Your words not mine.

Also , while yes I believe (by your definition) there are koolaid drinkers, did brand loyalty and self formed opinions ever cross your mind? You make the same assumptions you are blasting other people about.

I'm a VZW fan boy, I admit it, doesn't make me a koolaid drinker because I throw out the lingo of corporate marketing. They are paid the money to make things catchy and easy to say, so best coverage is a phrase I use, because it does matter to a ton of people.

You seem to have a decent brain, so use it. And by the way ge...

Sometimes.... But every once in a rare while he shows some sign of intelligence so it throws me off.

Like Nextel18, i used to hate him, but atleast he brings facts to the table, and now, he can take those facts, and although he has documented thoroughly he isn't a fan of verizon, says this alltel aquisition is a good thing. That's a respectable thing, maybe joe will learn to do the same, 😁, til then you can search rjsumthin on my posts and see how many times he got owned by yours truly, 😁

I'm not dissing Alltel in any way, just clarifying. Isn't there "largest network" claim largely due to all the roaming agreements they have (many with VZW)? Don't they only have there own towers in about 40 states? Just curious.
...
tnt2k1

Jun 6, 2008, 1:38 PM
I think VZW's definitely of largest network is enhanced network ... the network where you can actually use VZW's services ... regardless of roaming agreements.

From my understanding ... Sprint has the largest network in terms of owning their own towers. But that was a while ago.

Actually, Alltel's owned infrastructure covers more geographical area than any other carrier...and the merger will give VZW quite a lot of existing towers to build-out their 700mhz network on...
...
gozvzw

I don't get how they can cover a larger geographical area with their OWN towers when they are only in 34 states (I said 40 earlier, that was wrong). How can they have more area covered then VZW, Sprint and AT&T? I wondering with there own towers, not including roaming agreements. The national carriers are in almost all 50 states each.
